Especially if there are young children in the house!
But Freedom! And Constitution!

See, it is not as if a changed situation (black power weapons are slow to load, and keeping them loaded all the time isn't such a great idea) or even a change in the use of language (there seems to be a discussion what 'infringe' meant in the late 18th century) has any relevance here.

The Constitution says that you can have any kind of gun in any kind of situation without any rules... and if a few hundred children have to die for this every year, it is a price you obviously have to and are willing to pay.

How are you going to enforce that?
The way you enforce every law: assume that people follow the law, and if they are found to break it, make them pay the proscribed fine or serve the prison sentence.

So, paying a fine or serving prison on top of your own child getting accidentally killed. Got it.

And on top of serving prison for involuntary manslaughter. If your own child dies out of your negligence, you should be punished for it's death the same way you are punished if a stranger's child would have shot himself with your weapon because of your negligence.

There are few things I loathe more than the notion of "Oh, the poor parent, their only child is dead because of their stupidity, they have suffered enough, let's let them off the hook!" Bluagh.

Also, a child shooting himself isn't the only way something like this can be found out. For example, police officers might search the house for different reasons (like a drug bust), and if they find a weapon lying around, it goes onto the tab.

"Accidentially" is an evasion here. It suggests that no one is to blame, nothing could have been done. Tough luck, sorry for your loss.

But it is negligence, not an accident, and you would face the same repercussions for every other act of negligence that you are responsible for that results in the harm of others.

It happens when people leave their child in a hot car or other situations of neglect, why should this be different?
I have more sympathy for those kind of incidents, because in cases like those, the parent often isn't to blame, their brain just makes a simple mistake because it is going on autopilot. Those really ARE accidents.

But we'll have more than enough opportunity to talk about these come next summer, when another batch of children will swelter to death in cars (completely preventable too, of course, but the systems of prevention would stop the cars from being sold because no parent wants to admit to himself that something like this might happen to them).
