    1 Timothy 2:1-8: NASB

1First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions andthanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, 2for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.3This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time. 7For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying) as a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

8Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and dissension.

Does this exhortation to Evangelize confirm a Universalist Reconciliation (UR) view?

A general call to preach the Gospel to all nations, peoples, tongues?

    Or something else (explain)

I used to think this verse referred to UR.

I now believe that what is being said, is simply that God desires all men to be saved through Christ, and in His own way, by means we can not exactly know, may give everyone a chance to be saved.

I heard a homily by a Franciscian father which talked about sufficient vs. efficient grace. A grace given sufficiently, but to which not everyone will respond.

Edit: I think this might be it.

Thanks. So you would see this as a general call and urging to come to Christ?

I did not want to get into “response to” the Gospel just yet. Probably another thread.

Yeah, I would, and also, a reflection of God's active will that all be saved. He actively, actually loves all of us, and truly longs for us to be with Him forever. He wants all of us with Him so badly that He became incarnate, died a cruel and lonely death, and harrowed Hell.

I would say a general call.

We need to pray for people in general and our leaders especially. It grieves me when Christians attack the government, whatever country they are in. If it is a democratic nation, Christians get the government they pray for. That should get us thinking. And praying. If it is not democratic, then God has appointed the rulers. If you don't like them, pray for them! The reason is that we want to live in peace and have the freedom to preach the gospel. Those freedoms are under great threat. Many churches are like Laodicea and live in spiritual pride and complacency. Take a look at the history of Laodicea. You may find a mosque nearby but for sure no church. The UR people do use this verse. I have one objection to UR that I am unable to overcome in my mind. In order even to see the Kingdom of God, you must be born again. I see nowhere in God's word that there is an opportunity to be born again in the next life. I hope I am wrong. I have no desire to see anyone in God's creation suffer eternal separation from God. But an awful lot of people refuse to accept God's gracious gift and so they suffer the consequences. So it seems to me, anyway.

Of course, the city of Laodicea was abandoned centuries ago.

That tends to happen when spiritual rot sets in and nothing is done. All the other churches in the book of Revelation suffered the same fate.

The text does indicate our heart should evangelize with this love.

According to the OP and the text provided, is this a general call to preach the Gospel to all, or an indication “all men” will be saved?

There is often a tendency to take an incidental truth and use it to build an errant theology.
    1. Does this exhortation to Evangelize confirm a Universalist Reconciliation (UR) view?
No. Paul does not mean that all will be saved, that would be contrary to many other clear scriptures.

    2. A general call to preach the Gospel to all nations, peoples, tongues?
No. Although Paul personally felt this call to the Gentiles, he did not tell others to copy his ministry. He saw his role as unique.

    3. Or something else (explain)
The context is that Paul is instructing Timothy on how to bring order to the church in the midst of false teachers. Apparently, some were teaching that Christians were free from the laws of men. Paul is teaching that Human laws are good as they restrain evil and maintain peace. Peace is good for sharing the gospel, so Christians should pray for peace and for the human leaders responsible for maintaining peace.

In a nutshell, Paul is saying the Christians should obey the law and pray for peace in order to promote the gospel of salvation.

Yes very good context provided. So you would see this as a general call to preaching the Gospel to all?

Yes, but not is the sense of "You are a bad Christian if you don't prioritize evangelism." I see it more as Paul saying, "You knuckleheads are making my job harder".

Since we don't really know who will be saved, praying a general prayer for all men is apprpriate.

It means that God wants us to pray for all people, no matter what type
of person they are. We are to pray for kings, governors, as God desires
that they also get born again. If they die in their sins though, they will not
get mercy and forgiveness from Him.

I think it means that the message is for all people. Forgiveness is offered for all people.
