The guy shot his age group. So, it might be personal.

Think you might be right on this one. Too bad some stories jumped immediately to a hate crime. Nothing about this one appears to show that. "Crying wolf" doesn't help when actual hate crimes happen.

    Tragic event all around.

Taiwanese Presbyterian Church with an Asian shooter from out of town. Be interesting to see what turns out to be the motive, assuming we find out.

Little is known about the shooting itself. But the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said an Asian man in his 60s is in custody and that he is not from the Orange County area. Law enforcement sources told The Times the suspect was a 68-year-old Asian man who is originally from Las Vegas. It’s unclear what connection — if any — he had to the church.

Chen said the shooting marred what was a special occasion. The congregation was excited to see Pastor Chang, who had been their pastor for 20 years before going to Taiwan, Chen said.

David Wenwei Chou of Las Vegas was identified by authorities as the suspect in the Laguna Woods church shooting at an Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church luncheon. One person was killed and five others were injured at Geneva Presbyterian Church in California, where the Taiwanese church gathered for its services.

A neighbor who knew Chou said the suspected gunman had recently become homeless after he was evicted from his property, and said that he believed Chou was struggling with mental health issues.

The suspect in the Laguna Woods church shooting Sunday appeared to be motivated by political hatred directed at the Taiwanese community, Orange County Sheriff’s officials said Monday.

Among the evidence recovered, Barnes said, were notes written in Chinese that Chou left in his car showing he did not believe Taiwan should be an independent state from China. Law enforcement sources said investigators recovered a handwritten note in his car setting out his motivations and thinking for the attack.

Chou was born in mainland China and at some point relocated to Taiwan before moving to the United States, according to Barnes. The sheriff said it appears Chou had an issue with Taiwanese people because of the way he said he was treated while living there.

(I confess I considered and rejected the idea of suggesting that it was anti-Taiwan or anti-Taiwan independence.)

It's kind of weird to see "national origin" play out as a hate crime.

It's personal and a hate crime, and a waste.

    Ready your tiniest violins.

Months before police say he opened fire inside a Laguna Woods church, killing one person and wounding five others in what authorities have called a politically motivated attack, David Wenwei Chou’s life in Las Vegas was unraveling.

His wife had returned to Taiwan in December, to seek treatment for cancer but also to leave Chou in the midst of a divorce, according to their next-door neighbor, Balmore Orellana.

Between Orellana’s account and a declaration that Chou wrote as he tried to stave off eviction, a picture emerges of an embittered man whose world was collapsing around him. His critically ill wife had left him; he was unable to pay his rent, which was twice his monthly income; and he struggled to find work as a 68-year-old casino security guard.
