I've heard someone say it like this:

Japanese is a combo of "cute and curly" (Hiragana) plus Chinese Characters. I think Korean might use some Chinese characters too.
Japanese has katakana as well. (mainly enlgish loan words)

Korean doesn't. Japanese calls them kanji, which are still just Chinese characters with Japanese pronunciations (like: 心 as こころ kokoro) can be worked in like あなたの心です (it is your heart). Still, I love the description of Chinese as the threatening one. It really is when you try to write it!
