Upon gazing at the glassy sea, he could never know how it could change. In an instant it could batter one about, utterly ignoring cries for mercy. The sea is a cruel master, dealing out death indifferently. Many a sailor would confirm this, if they could speak from their watery graves.

Wuthering Heights--Emily Bronte "When beholding the tranquil beauty and brilliancy of the ocean's skin, one forgets the tiger heart that pants beneath it; and would not willingly remember that this velvet paw but conceals a remorseless fang."

Anne of Green Gables "In short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only."

Thud. Another bullet whizzed past him, striking the mud. The next deliverer of death hit its mark, barely allowing the certainty of his demise to touch the soldier's mind before his end came. He sprawled in the dirt, blood mingling with foreign soil. Another dream, another life snuffed out...

Writing Challenge: Write a story in 50 words.

wow, you guys are good :) This one has 51 words: The cliff was desolate, barren, uninhabitable. It seemed to stare icily at the sky, defying the elements by standing for years. Here and there a tiny plant dared to show itself between the rocks. And amongst it all walked a lonely man, the...

^oh hey, I like that! very intriguing and sad. Branches slapped his arms and legs and face as he ran unendingly, his eyes huge with unspoken terror. The forest at night was a dark beacon of death. And the footsteps, the footsteps that were haunting him, approached ever closer. There would...

Another one: Kicked up by deadly, stomping hooves, the dust rose from the dry ground, forming a halo around the sweating cowboy. His prized, worn hat flew off his head as he stuggled to maintain his seat on the furious horse. Eight seconds did indeed seem to be a lifetime.

Writing Challenge: Write a story in 50 words.

Fun! I've never actually tried writing anything so short, but here is my first attempt: The ivy trailed up the crumbling ruins, echoing a time when all was good and green. A solitary figure stumbled though the old stone corridors, not knowing nor caring where he was, nor what he was doing. He...

well, here is my entry. I hope it is alright. :) (Note: “Padraic” is Irish, pronounced “Pad-rick,” and he is my character.) Blood, dirt, sweat. The only reality. He had to get away, he had to escape. Run. Hide. No! Fight. But he could not. He could not take the life...

    Made up worlds

yes, I do currently have my own "world." It is actually more realistic than some I've made, with no magic or different creatures and races or anything, but there is an evil army sweeping down from the north, and no one seems to know its object and purpose, and no one knows exactly where it...

    Most Dramatic/Tragic

My most dramatic scene would be when my main character dies needlessly at the hands of an enemy, to protect information and the person he loves. I like doing dramatic and tragic scenes. At least, I can write them more easily than, say, romantic scenes and the like. :)

    Something I thought up.

Well, I don't know much about sci-fi, but that is good! I am curious now about the story (like, why are the Cats trying to kill them? why is the army made up of high-schoolers and why were they abducted in the first place??). :)

    Equestrian medevil games

Those are great pictures! I think it would be really neat to do the equestrian sports in the SCA. Two of my greatest loves are horses and the medieval time period. What all did you do at the Baron Wars? And yes, thanks, I have checked the SCA website. The closest group is still quite a...

    Medieval swordfighting...

Oh, you are so fortunate!!! I live in the middle of nowhere where the SCA practically does not exist. Plus, like I said before, I barely fit in the age limit. Great medieval name, by the way!

    Equestrian medevil games

Awesome! I have wanted to join the SCA, but there are no groups near me, plus I barely fit in the age limit. I think it is great how you get to make your own medieval personna and everything. But I do make my own swords (boffers) and try to convince people to fight me^_^ I'm also sewing my...
