    NFP in Marriage?

It's more convenient to just refer to him as He who must not be named, the Mouth of Sauron, or something similar.

    NFP in Marriage?

I chose the tag as a joke many years ago. I only came by because gzt posted about this on Facebook. It's not at all reaching. Name a single Orthodox Church that has a policy forbidding contraception. There aren't any. Even the Russians allow it.

    NFP in Marriage?

Wrong. I have a child that was conceived while on chemotherapy, and has severe health issues likely do to that, because we were idiots and listened to him. Which was, directly from him, we had permission to practice nfp, or we could use condoms and not have communion, ever, unless we don't have...

    NFP in Marriage?

You can go by what every single Orthodox Church says everywhere and use contraception, or you can listen to some crazy convert priest in California and a smattering of quotes from saints who lived before the modern understanding of conception and modern methods of birth control. Just saying.

    What do you go by?

If it's a hospital, I will go by Eastern Orthodox or Greek Orthodox, since those are most likely to get you the right cleric if something should go wrong.

    The New Divide

IE, you want her to suggest that maybe her son is in fact not gay, but risked possible rejection and condemnation by his religious parents because he wanted to be in the "in crowd." How absurd is that? Maybe I'm strange, but I tend to trust my kids.

    The New Divide

She never said to find a church that would "indulge his passions." She said finding a more accepting church is an option. Which can mean anything from a church that deny communion but does not stigmatize him, to a church who a church that tells him it's not sin, with plenty of variation between...

    Controversial Questions

Macarius, Firstly, if the reason for instituting English in the Liturgy was distinctly anti-Orthodox, then it would have been capitulating. That is why I state that the woman deaconate should not be restored, at this time. Not because it is wrong, or cannot be restored, but because it would be...

    Controversial Questions

Macarius, "Capitulation" and "accessibility" are equivalents in the way you are using them. By "accessible" you mean palatable or pleasing to modern sensibilities without reference to traditional sensibilities. The point being that women can already be in the choir, leading the choir, be a...

    Controversial Questions

Macarius, Women deacons were not ordained in the manner of men deacons. The funtion of women deacons was chiefly that of baptizing women converts, since at that time baptisms were done in the nude. Could the woman deaconate be restored? Sure it could. Should it? At this time it should not...

Lifelong protestant considering Orthodoxy. I have some questions.

There are differing opinions on this, but violence is never good and even a soldier must have a time of penance for killing. On the extreme side, there are monks who try to not kill even insects. The Orthodox have a long history with the State as well, though in a different manner. The...

    Folk Songs

Here's one that makes my wife mad when I sing it to our son: In Yarmouth town there lived a man He had a little tavern by the strand And the landlord had a daughter fair Pretty little thing with golden hair [Chorus:] Won't you come down Won't you come down Won't you come down to Yarmouth town...

    Schmemann and Modernity in Orthodoxy

The real question is why do the ultra-pomos herald Fr. A.S. as their own? And why do they cling to, and deduce from, his liturgical work, which was based on intellectual assumtions and methods that were en vogue at the time but have since been disproven (such as the idea that there was a...

    EO view of Smoking

THE DREGS OF PURITANISM -GK Chesterton One peculiarity of the genuine kind of enemy of the people is that his slightest phrase is clamorous with all his sins. Pride, vain-glory, and hypocrisy seem present in his very grammar; in his very verbs or adverbs or prepositions, as well as in what he...

    EO view of Smoking

Which harkens back to my original argument about bourgeois moralizing, especially when aimed at the working class (and the "Saving it from itself", as Matrona brought forth). I smoke a pipe on occasion, and sometimes a hooka with some friends. Cigarettes do not appeal to me on any level, but...

    EO view of Smoking

You will hear no argument from me about the enviroment. I have noted my political leanings before: http://pactum-serva.blogspot.com/2008/01/anti-capitalist-notions.html The point being that we do many things each day that are effectively facilitating our demise, and most of these are not...
