I saw a lot of things as obedience issues, too. I've had people tell me that we obey the bishop but not the priest, that obedience is for monastics and not laity, and other variants. I felt I'd rather be obedient to a priest who might be wrong but who's heart is in the right place than disobey...

There's no single dividing issue. There have been personality differences, cultural differences, control issues, differences of opinions pre-COVID. They just reached a breaking point recently, outwardly over masks but really I think it gave people a reason to no longer try.

Interesting! I'm Antiochian and so the priests I've had this discussion with were Antiochian as well. Why would the Metropolitan be anti-monastic? (I was not around for Metropolitan Philip). EDIT: I never put 2 + 2 together and figured out we don't have our own monasteries here...

Hmmmm....maybe it's a local thing where I am, dunno. But I've experienced it firsthand and know others who have. Glad it's not more widespread.
