    Disagreements in society ...

I feel this so much right now. I remember a time when I could enjoy debating politics online or with friends and co-workers and people respected each other. One could still be friends and even respect the intellect of someone with polar-opposite views. Now, everyone seems an extremist that...

    Protestant Converts to Eastern Orthodoxy:Questions.

    1. I was an over 40, life-long Baptist. I studied all denominations and even other religions, mostly just to be able to converse with non-Protestants and non-Christians. A combination of the theology, the beautiful liturgical worship, and the beautiful icons kept drawing me to learn more about...

    i asked ...

That's fantastic news! I second what Lukaris said. I learned a lot from those three websites when I began my journey towards Orthodoxy. I'm still very new to it myself. I especially got a lot from this section from the OCA website: The Orthodox Faith Early on I also listened to Ancient Faith...

A Hard One - if you couldn't go to an Orthodox Church, where would you go?

I'm new to Orthodoxy myself. The first resource I used to understand the basics was Thomas Hopko's four-part series. It can be read online at the OCA website here: The Orthodox Faith

Seeking Prayers and Advice on Converting

Another update: My dad was more understanding and supportive than I expected. It really surprised me. My mom thinks I'm crazy and my sister thinks I'm a heretic. That's okay though, they just have a lot of misconceptions about Orthodoxy. I believe they'll come around. I went to the Greek...

No such thing as " believing " for salvation .

I hadn't read through the entire thread yet and was just throwing out my thoughts on what might constitute an ad populum argument. I've now read where you pointed that out earlier. For the record, I'm listening to your points and want you to continue too. I see you're heading off for the night...

No such thing as " believing " for salvation .

An ad populum argument, for those who don't know, is saying the majority believe something, so it must be true. An example would be saying most people believe in a god or higher power, therefore, there definitely is one. At one point, the majority likely believed that the sun went around the...

i want to become orthdox ec

I am sorry to hear about this. Family issues like this can be difficult, especially when it's your spouse. I am afraid I don't have any good advice and will leave that up to those here that are smarter than I am, who have been in the Orthodox Faith longer. I just wanted to say I will be praying...

Where do people usually begin reading the OT?

I don't find it boring, especially the "collection of stories," but then, I like reading history in general, which a lot of people find dry and boring. You can think of the O.T. in separate parts: the Law, the Prophets, and the poetic books. The law is the first five books, the poetic is...

Seeking Prayers and Advice on Converting

Happy Thanksgiving! My brother-in-law has loaned me a car. It was technically my nephews, but he is away at college. It will be a couple of months before I can afford a down payment on my own due to life happening and so many unforeseen financial things all at once. It looks like your prayers...

Seeking Prayers and Advice on Converting

A bit of an update about my family. I have an aunt who is in her 80s. She's Baptist, very opinionated and loves to talk about the Bible and politics. I try to see her once a week or at least once every two weeks. She gave me my first guitar lessons when I was a young kid, and I've been playing...

Seeking Prayers and Advice on Converting

abacabb3, thanks for the prayers and the advice. Anastasia, I am now talking to a priest via email. He is looking into finding a ride for me. I didn't actually even ask, he just said he would try to figure something out. I'm one of those people that hates to ask for any sort of help. I don't...

purchasing icons, the good, the bad and the ugly

That PO Box is for a fulfillment center that handles online stores, website maintenance, shipping, warehouse storage, and customer service for some 30 or more companies. If you ever order Avon, Nike shoes, Hugo Boss suits or a whole bunch of other things, they will have the same return address...

Seeking Prayers and Advice on Converting

Thanks for your reply! I have, in fact, just ordered one along with a prayer rope. I've been saying the Jesus Prayer throughout the day for weeks now. It's such a beautiful and powerful prayer. It's a great way to pray without ceasing, as St. Paul the Apostle instructed us to do.

Seeking Prayers and Advice on Converting

I've discovered two that are only about 30 or 40 minutes away. I'm going to take your advice and contact a Priest of the nearest parish by email. He openly invites anyone to do so. Thank you so much for your detailed reply! It was nice to hear from someone who has went through similar things...

Seeking Prayers and Advice on Converting

I would like to request prayers for a couple of things. First and foremost for my decision to convert to Orthodox Christianity. I am 42 and have been a life-long Baptist. My grandfather and father were Baptist ministers. My grandfather passed away some years back and my dad is now retired. I...
