in Luke 9:23 > What does Jesus mean by the "cross" He wants us to carry?

"Crosses" are obstacles in our life which we encounter that will strengthen our faith as we either overcome or endure them. "Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed--not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence--continue to work out your salvation with fear and...

    Apophatic Prayer & Meditation

It sounds to me as if you are talking about contemplative prayer... "Apophatic" is a means of describing something by means of negation i.e.; saying what it is not. "Cataphatic" is describing something by listing it's attributes. Apophatic concepts include: ineffable, incomprehesable...

in Luke 9:23 > What does Jesus mean by the "cross" He wants us to carry?

Notice that Jesus says: "His cross"... Not "the cross" or "My cross." Each person has their own personal and unique cross to carry.

    Music/Sounds with Prayer?

For me, music is a distraction. This is especially true when it comes to contemplative prayer.

    How to Have Patience

The development of patience basically requires three elements: Failure Hope Time and Repetition of the process. When I ask monks (at any monastery that I visit) "Exactly what do you do here?" I always get the same answer: "I fall down and I get up, I fall down and I get up, I fall down and I...

WHAT IS ORTHODOX ASCETICISM? Deacon Charles Joiner

All I know is that my SF had plans for me and laid out a very explicit strategy for me. His instructions are still valid and working well for me to this day. (He reposed 5 Feb., 2016.) Fr. A was more than my spiritual father, he was a near and dear friend (more like a brother.) While I am under...

WHAT IS ORTHODOX ASCETICISM? Deacon Charles Joiner

I have only been there once (so far). That was when I made my Oblation in the summer of 2018. I would like to go there every summer for their Oblate's Retreat. It is a bit of a financial stretch for me since I live in New York State. I would like to go there at least once a year. In the...

WHAT IS ORTHODOX ASCETICISM? Deacon Charles Joiner

As I understand it from my Spiritual Father, Asceticism (n.b.; capital "A") is: A life of adhering to Christian Discipline (either imposed or self-imposed) in your daily life. I had been seeking a life as a monastic but, when the doors seemed to close, my SF thought that, perhaps, I was being...

    Radical Fasting

Remember that God putting you in situations is very different than putting yourself in situations. We are told in both the Old and New Testaments not to put God to the test (Deut. 6:16, Luke 4:12.)

I am no longer a Lutheran. I am now Eastern Orthodox. If you have a Kindle, you can get enough to last you for years for $2.99 (USD.) There is probably a lot in here that will be of no interest to you but, for the price, you have a wide variety from which you can pick and choose. This was so...

I grew up as a Lutheran. As such I was totally ignorant of the writings of The Church Fathers (do a search on this.) All I was told about were the writers of the books of the Bible. Church history pretty much started with Luther and the Reformation. see: Early Church Fathers For writers who...

Why Can't I Feel the Holy Spirit Anymore? Have I Lost It?

Anybody who is worried that they might have committed the unpardonable sin hasn't committed it! If you had, you wouldn't care.
