Religious upbringing associated with less altruism, study finds

I'm saying we don't know for sure whether they're right or wrong. One of the problems with statistics is that people take them as gospel truth. "Gee, they did a study. This must be absolutely right." Most people don't have any grasp at all of the nuance of statistics in so called soft...

Religious upbringing associated with less altruism, study finds

Yes, great work @2PhiloVoid in finding the actual study. They do provide a working definition of altruism: cost for the donor and benefit for the recipient This statement seems to be the crux of the "religious children aren't as altruistic" theme: religiousness was inversely predictive of...

Religious upbringing associated with less altruism, study finds

With a few rare moments of free time, I thought I would respond more in-depth. Since some are calling into question the voracity, background and training of others in this thread, here's an article from the Scientific American that discusses the challenges of drawing conclusions from the study...

Religious upbringing associated with less altruism, study finds

So, they used a self-identification methodology - perhaps the most flawed data collection methodologies known to man? As I said, it's a fairly old study. When it came out, I actually dug in and took a look at the study. I'm not suggesting that the researchers approached the topic with an...

    Questions about the military

Vengeance is mine, says the Lord. Obviously, it isn't as simple as that, but you need to seek your own understanding of what the Bible says about joining the military, war and killing. I recognize that this forum may serve a role in your seeking but one should not rely on the seeking of others...

    Polygamy and divorce

I don't know that anyone is "arguing" this point. I think the original question was more along the lines of, "Is polygamy less sinful than divorce?" As far as I know, there is no specific condemnation of polygamy in the Bible (not just the Torah). Yet, we see divorce condemned numerous times.

    Polygamy and divorce

Here we have the standard for deacons/bishops. What about the rest of us? I'm not exactly sure I understand Constantine's meaning of "Holy Tradition" but it seems to me that some of the holiest men in the Bible, e.g. David and Solomon, had multiple wives. (Is that what is meant by 'Holy...

Does the economy do better under Democrats?

I suggested the movie because: A. It is based on books, and B: It could be seen more quickly (to meet the OP's timeline) than one could read the books on which it was based. I think you misunderstood ... local government has far more sway over a local economy than federal government does over...

Does the economy do better under Democrats?

For a glimpse into the history of the Democratic party, go see the movie Hillary's America. For a glimpse into the economic impact of the Democratic party, look at cities that have been governed largely by Democrats for many years.

Does the economy do better under Democrats?

Is your professor trying to suggest that there is a causal link between a president's party and the nation's economic performance? If so, your professor doesn't understand correlation and causation. What metrics did your professor suggest as indicators of economically "better"?

    Husband naps too much!

You can let it drive you crazy ... or not. I suspect that the previous posters have hit upon some of the possibilities. Your husband may be depressed, he may be stressed, he may just need to decompress after coming home from work. There are a million possibilities. Almost assuredly, there is...

    Question about living with someone

Stepping away from the varying opinions on pre-marital sex for a moment, there are any number of things that could make a marriage difficult - the toilet paper being rolled the wrong way, the toothpaste being squeezed in the wrong place, sexual incompatibilities ... the list is virtually...

    Husband driving me crazy

I own a company that has employees in about 300 houses a month. You'd be surprised (perhaps) at how some people live. Pet urine and feces in the house ... on the deck ... hoarding ... obvious lack of cleaning .... It goes on and on. @FeelingSteppedOn maybe if you rubbed your husband's nose...
