Earth in hot water? Worries over sudden ocean warming spike

Chicago does. (This post is about as relevant as others in this thread).

Don't get king hit by a shrimp.

Science was used to solve problems but since I answered to an engineer the countermeasures were engineering solutions.

Don't get king hit by a shrimp.

My role in the company evolved into a sort of Mr. Fixit with the emphasis on science rather than engineering. I gave an example of the use of science in solving a corrosion problem rather than engineering...

Massive black hole discovered close to Earth

Spaghettification can also occur with neutron stars and white dwarfs which not only depends on the strength of the tidal forces but also on the rigidity of the object being stretched.

Don't get king hit by a shrimp.

I worked as a scientist. The company operated on an escalation system, if a problem couldn't be resolved by suppliers for components parts, or inhouse parts such as engines, the problem was escalated to the next level where it became the responsibility of scientists and specialists. This also...

Don't get king hit by a shrimp.

I'm all too familiar with the effects of cavitation in the automotive industry particularly for cooling systems. A very simple test for long life coolant is an anti foaming test, if the coolant foamed after vigorous shaking it was a strong indicator that cavitation would eventually destroy...

Instead of the lights going out they literally turn on.

Massive black hole discovered close to Earth

As mentioned in post#6 for supermassive black holes tidal forces only build up to significant levels inside the event horizon for spaghettification to occur which can never be observed. For stellar mass black holes such as Cygnus X-1 mentioned in the OP it was not spaghettification which defined...

Massive black hole discovered close to Earth

Here is a fun fact based on the mathematics behind black holes. An astronaut at or near the event horizon of a supermassive black hole will experience nothing, whereas for a stellar mass black hole the astronaut would have been torn to shreds by the tidal forces.

New moons discovered orbiting Uranus & Neptune

Why do you even bother asking the question when you know you are going to get a nonsensical incoherent response?

New moons discovered orbiting Uranus & Neptune

No. It would have to be in hydrostatic equilibrium where gravity prevents the gas from dispersing into the vacuum of space. Moons do not have enough mass for gravity to achieve this.

Peter Higgs, physicist who proposed Higgs boson, dies aged 94

Hawking did express concerns about the Higgs field being in a false vacuum state leading to vacuum decay as described in the video in post#11.

Peter Higgs, physicist who proposed Higgs boson, dies aged 94

The "prophets of doom" in this case were the media which initiated a snowball effect by reporting on the scenarios when the RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) was commissioned in the States a decade before the LHC. The media became aware after articles were published in Scientific American...

Peter Higgs, physicist who proposed Higgs boson, dies aged 94

When the LHC was constructed to find the Higgs boson, prophets of doom claimed our planet was going to be destroyed in variety of ways involving mini black holes, strangelets, vacuum bubbles and magnetic monopoles (my favourite). It forced CERN to issue a statement to alleviate public fears...

the myth of flat earth debunked again

Since stars drift out of position due to precession, Astronomical nutation - Wikipedia and Proper motion - Wikipedia astronomers need to redefine their positions in fifty year intervals known as epochs. For the B1950.0 epoch the position of Polaris was RA 01h 48m 47s, Dec +89° 02’ 06". For the...
