I am afraid of taking the holy communion

Have you spoken with the pastor about your specific questions? He will answer your questions, and most likely invite you to take a catechism class. Get yourself a Luther's Small Catechism with a questions and answers section and read it.

A C and P from lcms.org Q: What are the main differences between the Missouri Synod and the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS)? A: From the LCMS perspective, the three main theological differences between the LCMS and the WELS are the following: The biblical understanding of...

Do some of you refuse to shake hands during the "sharing of the peace"? Just as many germs there.

    communion question

Having helped distribute the Lord's Supper for years, you are fooling yourself thinking the individual cups are cleaner than the common. After seeing all the fumbling around in the distribution tray, plenty of fingers touch those cups. I really dislike the plastic cups.... throw away mentality.

    Elders and communion

Lay persons, elder or not, should not be administering communion. We may assist, but that is different than administering. Article XIV: Of Ecclesiastical Order. Of Ecclesiastical Order they teach that no one should publicly teach in the Church or administer the Sacraments unless he be...

    Lutherans and Anglicans

It is extremely rare for my congregation to not have communion at every service. The sad state of attendance by some of our parishioners lead to this implementation, so when they did show up they could receive the Lord's Supper. I am all for at most services. What a precious gift. Why should...

    Call Process

Sadly, my congregation is also starting the call process. Out pastor leaves in a couple weeks. I pray that we have minimal divisiveness. But having a traditional service and a contemporary service , we have essentially two congregations within the same building and I sense this will cause...

    Private Liturgy / Sacraments

At my congregation, usually our pastor communes last. We use the common cup, and he consumes the remainder (if it is not too much, otherwise it is poured on the grass outside). The elders do assist in the distribution, and also the distribution to the pastor.

    Eighth Commandment Hypocrisy

dario68w, you must be referring to the letter of the 32. I am guilty of using the 8th commandment to help suppress a serious matter that could have really blown out of proportion. Accusations were flying around and I did not want it to get out of hand before serious damage was done for all...

    A New Lutheran

Speak to your Pastor. I am somewhat surprised you did not receive instruction using the Small Catechism when you joined. Your church may offer adult catechism classes.

    Who Are We To Judge

Thank you for all the replies. I just has been getting under my skin lately that fellow Christians, who should know better, have such a permissive attitude toward sin, and then back it up with "oh, who are we to judge". I do like your snappy reply littlelamb, but it doesn't exactly make...

    Who Are We To Judge

This last year I have been frequently noticing this statement by other Christians and it is starting to bug me. I lead a Bible class discussion group, as it sometimes happens, a question is thrown in from left field, and the statement "Who are we to judge" was mentioned. I know that WE...

thoughts on the use of 'drama' for midweek lent

We have "skit's" all the time. Especially during Advent and Lenten midweek and special services. They do not take the place of the sermon, or scripture readings. They are in addition to the service. I have even been involved with parts, although reluctantly. I still have mixed feelings, I...

    voting democratic... not christian?

Before the election my pastor answered a similar question during bible study with the question, "Is it a sin to vote for a sinner?" Food for thought

I know people can be petty but wow...

As an elder myself, when issues like this happen, I try to follow Matthew 18:15. If persons are offended by your playing, (certainly not a sin, just a matter of opinion) they should speak to you in private, not get the elders involved. It is nearly always the same, if someone has a complaint...

Why no Eucharist at every service?

Every service here. With so many people only making it to services 2 or less times a month, Pastor wants to make sure the sacrament is available.
