    Proof of Intelligent Design

I'd like to know more about it. Post away.

    Proof of Intelligent Design

I don't think you'll be able to make a convincing arguement for ID by citing biological examples (i.e. the eye, brain, etc.) I would think you're best bet would be on the atomic and molecular level. Life wouldn't be possible at all if it weren't for the precise behavior of, say, carbon and...

A special edition of Scientific American

Please don't sidetrack this thread into the "Literal Interpretation of the Bible Debate." The point was that the immergence of man and intelligence is, supposively, rather mysterious and abrupt. It could've been caused by a god, or aliens, or just the natural course of evolution.

when did life start and continue on the planet?

It's not literally infinite. Just near-infinite due to the size.

when did life start and continue on the planet?

Virtual particles, from what I understand, are created from quantum fluctuations in a vacuum. They pop in as positive and negative pairs and annihilate each other, I believe. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. How did they find this out? I think the Casimir Effect is a good example of it...

when did life start and continue on the planet?

I define my purpose in life to live as best as I can, grow as a person, help others and hopefully have a positive influence on people around me. I would say that's pretty worthwhile. Whether there is an afterlife or not is irrelevant. One last bit about being "lucky". You sit all cozy in...

when did life start and continue on the planet?

That's all fine and dandy, but there's nothing we observe in nature that points to such a conclusion. Granted, you may be right, but you no way of providing any evidence to support it. So don't be surprised when some people have no belief in a god or the supernatural.

when did life start and continue on the planet?

So, if I don't believe in the possibility of alien life, I get to go to your heaven?

when did life start and continue on the planet?

Given the near infinite size of the universe, even with incredibe odds of something happening, it had to happen somewhere. A good analogy is the lottery: What are the odds of someone winning the lottery? Like 1 in 21 million. Now, imagine someone winning the lottery and claiming God made...

    aliens

Perhaps. Regardless what these aliens believe, it wouldn't change the evidence here on Earth.

    Speed of light

Actually, here's a great (and fun) website on the subject: http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/PAO/warp.htm

    Speed of light

I don't think it will ever be possible to actually physically push an object past the speed of the light. Einstein's Theory of General Relativity prohibits that and we all know Einstein was a genius. So we'll have none of that! The question remains, though, is how fast can space itself...

    aliens

I think I've read where they could create propulsion systems now that could get us there in 50 years or so. Would just cost a bazillion dollars.

    aliens

Yeah, but aren't we just scanning a certain range of the EM band? I think that's the problem. We're assuming they're transmitting along the 1420Mhz (?) band. Also, if ETs are thousands or even millions of years more advanced than us, I'm sure they will be using communication methods far...

    aliens

Fermi's Paradox. And it's true, if alien intelligence has evolved, by all rights they SHOULD be here. Only possibilities are that indeed we are alone or we are being left alone. Our methods of trying to detect alien civilizations is pretty primitive. We are assuming an other wordly...

    aliens

I'd like to point out that there isn't any proof that aliens exist. Although I'm sure there is life beyond Earth, and I wouldn't be surprised if some form of primitive life is found in our solar system over the next few decades. However, if contact with an extraterrestrial civilization does...
