For Pacifists: If Jesus was a pacifist, why didn't he tell all Roman soldiers....

Really? These scriptures have at least been cited in the thread: Mat 26:52 Mat 5:38-39 Mat 5:43-46 Mat 10:28 Luke 6:27-29,35 Mat 10:16 1 Pe 3:8 Rom 12:17-21 1 Thes 5:15 Eph 6:12 2 Cor 10:3 James 3:18 Heb 12:14 1 Cor 4:11 I won't say the exegisis has been phenomenal, but they are still there...

Everyone involved, I'm signing off of this thread. It's had some great dialogues and has covered a lot of topics. I truly hope it's been beneficial for all the seekers. But it's my opinion that it's reached its maturity and threshold for easy navigation and consistency. Maybe some of the...

I no longer think it's at all fruitful to respond to your posts, at least on this thread. I'll leave it to other readers to judge why. Blessedj01, I admire the dedication and zeal you have for engaging in doctrinal discussions, as your post history demonstrates within the past few months. As...

You just redefined the word 'wanton'. They are being obedient to state rulers and their oath to execute justice, but not to Jesus Christ or his laws of justice for the Church. Stay on topic - I'm saying they are not as bad as "wanton violence" or sadism. But they are indeed still...

Wanton: adjective (of a cruel or violent action) Deliberate and unprovoked. Synonymous with: crude, filthy, lewd, obscene, smutty, impure Are Christian soldiers or police officers engaging in wanton violence? No. Are they being disobedient according to the precepts of Christ? Yes. No one...

So I'm thinking there are two boxes in question... Box 1) wanton violence Box 2) violence banned for Christians No one here is trying to re-define 'self-defense' by cramming it into Box 1. Someone is just hyping up the observation that Box 2 contains wanton violence as well as self-defense...

Hey DesertScroll - I appreciate your engaging response. Based on the syntax and diction here surrounding ekdikesis, I may have understated the difference between Christians avenging themselves and civil authorities avenging wrongs in a broad sense. While I would not classify that as a caveat to...

Cool - I see what you're saying here. While I hesitate to agree that collecting a monetary debt is the same as vengeance, the parable here does attest to the underlying reason why Christians should not seek vengeance for themselves. Their former crimes against God are not being avenged, just...

Commence the ad hominem attacks! :) lol I've been on this thread since the beginning and have not read many posts with supporting evidence from scripture that Christians SHOULD be involved in government and/or violence. However, there are many good posts (such as the ones from MrJim) that...

Funny how quick you are to concede that your posts are opinionated and presuppositional. I, however, will continue to let my contributions speak for themselves and affirm they offer good REASONS to reconsider the post-constantinian mindset of the church and government.

Again, more unfounded presuppositions and opinions. For people who look to establish their doctrine and decisions upon dividing the Word properly and sound reasoning, the fact that Blessedj01 "totally disagrees" that Christians are not authorized to carry out the duties of the police or military...

Care to support your claims? I see a lot of opining, and disagreeing, and presuppositional tactics, but not a lot of sound reasoning or scriptures cited to back it up. Sorry.

Um...first, would you please scripturally demonstrate that that offering violence in return for violence is "completely different" from self-defense or national defense? Exodus 15:3 is true. What's your point? I mean, clearly Jesus didn't demonstrate his soldiering prowess on earth when he...

James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. Phil 3:20 For our citizenship is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: 21 Who...

Matthew 18:23-35 really doesn't apply to this discussion concerning ekdikesis or vengeance. The only "evildoer" in that parable was the servant who didn't conform to the likeness of his master by forgiving his fellowservant of the debt that was owed. And the divine master punished him justly...

Thanks for the response, DesertScroll; and my apologies on the late reply. I will address your disagreement below. You have not sufficiently shown from the texts that Paul is establishing two different types of ekdikesis (this is the correct noun form). I think you have haphazardly enlarged...

Quote... Military members across the globe who claim Christ should think heavily on their need to divorce themselves from the service based on his commandments. That's hypocritical. You can't say "country" which by implication means you belong to one, without implying sovereignty, which...

I hope everyone pauses this Memorial Day to reflect on the sacrifice Jesus Christ was willing to make for the purpose of our TRUE freedom from the bondage of sin and death. And upon that reflection, count him worthy to be obeyed even if the doctrine seems difficult and full of cost. Military...
