Actually, from priests and Bishops I have spoken to (Greeks mind you) the mati is just a superstition..but maybe the Church does recognize it, I don't know.

It is part of a superstition, the mati is what it's called, it's akin to placing a curse on someone. It was probably included for the people that buy into that..sort of "reaching them where they are at" kind of a thing...I dont know as I didn't write it.

Yes it's of course possible but only a priest would read such a prayer...but maybe there is a pray suitable for the laity, I have no knowledge of such a prayer..or much of anything.

It's possible, mental illness can be that way as well, causing spasms and things that are identified as possession. Could be either one, has to be dealt with on a case by case basis I would think.

It's really not impressive, it's usually pretty painful and humiliating because the people around you often think you're less than nothing, but I stick with it anyway because I'm not doing this for them or their approval.
