    The Byzantine Iconoclasm

Does anyone know of any good books regarding the Byzantine Iconoclasm, in particular with regards to the reactions of monastic communities and their persecution?

    Hagiographies

Hello  Does anyone know a website (or store if it has branches here in the UK) that delivers in the UK that sells Hagiographies (the lives of Saints)? In particular I'm looking of the Lives of any of the martyrs of the Iconoclasm, such as St. Stephan the Younger or St. Theodosia of...

    Treasury of Merits?

What exactly is the "Treasury of Merits"? Or more to the point what exactly is the whole merit system itself? I've heard it mentioned quite a few times in referance to Catholocism, purgatory and indulgences but I'm still not sure what exactly it is or whether it is actually a true Catholic...

    Sanctification?

What is the doctrine of Sanctification held by some protestant denominations? Is it similar to Theosis or something altogether differant?

    ECFs and the Eucharist

Given the wealth of good old Eucharist threads popping up around here I thought I would start one myself focusing on the Early Church Fathers regarding the matter. It is clear from the writings of Clement, Ignatius, Justin Martyr and Irenaeus that all of these bishops, some of whom were...

    Mithras Myth

Frequantly in this recent wave of anti-christmas posts, Mithras is frequantly pointed to as having some kind of similarity to Christ and for being born on December 25th. I have yet to see any historical evidence for these claims so if anyone would like to post some on this thread I would be...

    Indulgences?

I have always believed that indulgences was a purely Roman Catholic doctrine however this website seems to suggest otherwise: Indulgences in the history of the Greek Church / Ïðàâîñëàâèå.Ru Is this true? I was always under the impression that the mystery of penance was just that; a mystery...

    Jewish Prayers

Hello everyone  Religious Jews regularly pray to God and ask for forgiveness. Are these prayers "valid"? Does God answer them? They are directed to Him after all. Obviously there is no way of knowing this, God answers prayers as He sees fit, however I just thought it would be...

    Authority and Unity in RC

Hello  I was watching the news recently and there was a report about Catholicism (nothing unusual atm here in England due to the Pope's imminent visit). Prior to seeing this report I had assmued that Catholicism was like Orthodoxy with regards to doctrinal unity; although bishops may...

Do we disagree with the RCC about the date of Christ's death?

While I was on another thread someone said: "EO teaches Christ died on the 14th. RC teaches Christ died on the 15th. [of Nissan]" Is this true? At first I dismissed it out of hand, pretty sure that we celebrate his death on the same day, but I just wanted to clarify in case I am wrong.

    Amillenialism: What d'you think?

Recently I've been reading more and more about Eschatology and the End Times. For me Amillienialism seems to make the most sense but as you guys spend a lot of time discussing Eschatological matters I was wondering what you guys thought of it?

Protestants: What happened for over 1000 years?

Now first can I just say this question isn't directed at all protestants but rather those constantly accusing Catholocism and Orthodoxy of idolatry, paganism and other such things. Many of the practices that the protestants here are so vehemently denouncing were held universally by all...

    John the Baptist

I was recently reading the wikipedia page for John the Baptist when, while reading the "Eastern Orthodox" section I came across this: "..According to Sacred Tradition, John the Baptist appears at the time of death to those who have not heard the Gospel of Christ, and preaches the Good News to...

Dispensationalists: Why do we need to know?

I'm not a dispensationalist myself but I've noticed that many people who adhere to that doctrine are nigh on obsessed with predicting when the end of days will come. However from what I have read about dispensationalsm I don't see the need to obsess about it so much. I mean the end times will...

    Protestant Apostolic Sucession?

Do any of the protestant churches claim apostolic succession? I've heard the anglicans do (via the Archbishop of Canterbury) but what about the other high church protestants?

    "the elect"?

Hello!! While browsing this forum I have seem many referances to "the elect". From what I have read it seems that what is meant by this is that only "the elect" will be saved. If this indeed true then doesn't this invalidate free will and the personnal responsibility of a believer to...

    Universalism?

This is my first post so hello! I was wondering exactly where or whether Universal reconciliation (the belief that all souls will eventually attain salvation) fits into EO. I origionally though of it as a definite no however recently I've been reading that apparently certain Early...
