    Study Bible

I've enjoyed the New Oxford Annotated Bible, already mentioned, with the Apocrypha, as well as the Jewish Study Bible, which includes the New Jewish Publication Society translation of the Tanakh.

Monkeys taught to use money, use it like humans do.

Yahweh sure got really angry over a single mess-up, didn't he?

Can you be a Christian and believe evolution?

Yeah, no. All of those statements are flat-out wrong, and asserting that they aren't wrong is only going to help lead people who know better away from Christianity when they don't necessarily need to. Personally, I think that interpreting the creation stories in Genesis 1-2 in any historical...

    Which Bible Translation is Best?

For the New Testament and the Apocrypha, I prefer the NRSV, and often compare passages with the ESV. For the Old Testament / Hebrew Bible, I prefer the New Jewish Publication Society translation (in the Jewish Study Bible).

    Morality of "The Flood"

This is one of my favorite stories in the Bible, because it's basically saying that Yahweh felt he had to punt his entire creation, very inefficiently I might add, because he didn't foresee it getting so messed up.

    What could convince theists otherwise?

I'll second this. Reading and understanding the Bible (particularly the Hebrew Bible) forced me to change my position regarding the Abrahamic religions - not necessarily the existence of a god, however. And no, it's not because I hate Yahweh. It's just that I now see the Bible as the Israelites...

Is Christianity necessary to counter more hostile religions?

Any religion which advocates eternal punishment is a hostile one.

    Agnosticism, the lazy person's "religion"?

Good post. I'm still currently in the process of assimilating information about the major world religions, starting with Christianity and Judaism, primarily by actually reading through the Hebrew Bible and New Testament from an unbiased point of view, and also seeking information regarding the...

Evolution clearly described in the Bible!

For those who hold the book of Wisdom to be part of the Old Testament canon, does not this passage create some tension with evolution: "Do not invite death by the error of your life, or bring on destruction by the works of your hands; because God did not make death, and he does not delight in...

    Requesting HELP from Non-Calvinist

You cannot defend your previous point, so you are redirecting the argument. I understand. Warnings are warnings because they are actually applicable.

    Requesting HELP from Non-Calvinist

You've simply restated your previous interpretation, which I have shown to be untenable, with an additional verse (1 John 5:13) which is being used to reinforce the untenable premise. Why tell us what Christians do and do not look like, if those who are Christians don't have to worry about it...

    Requesting HELP from Non-Calvinist

Those passages are being misused (particularly the verse from 1 John - it's a call to holiness, not a promise). Let's go back in the passage a little bit. "No one who abides in him sins; no one who sins has either seen him or known him." 1 John 3:6 Using your method of interpretation, if...

    Requesting HELP from Non-Calvinist

All Christians will take the warnings seriously, because God won't let them do otherwise, correct? Thus, it's not really a warning, because warnings have possible consequences. If we get into a "state of carnality" and stay there, the Calvinist would say that you never had a relationship with...

    Requesting HELP from Non-Calvinist

I'm going to assume this warning is a kind of divine joke. "For if we wilfully persist in sin after having received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful prospect of judgement, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. Anyone who has...

That's somewhat of a relief. :) Thank you for the clarification. I don't intend to mischaracterize anyone.

    Suppose I renounced Protestantism...

I am not considered a Christian, then. I am outside the church; I am anathema.
