Formal debate Peanut Gallery: The dogma of Papal infallibility

Glad you said that. I was just reading this debate for the first time, and wondered why both parties' profile say "Catholic". (heweeps pointed out that they kept "calling the Roman Catholic Church the Catholic Church". Perhaps that was a foreshadowing.) Does anyone happen to know what...

How many Lutherans have you known who believed in Papal Infallibility?

    Orthodox wants to turn lutheran

Hi Fotis. I just read this thread for the first time. Then I noticed that you now consider yourself a Mormon. Bit surprising ... granted, this thread is almost a year old; but a year isn't very long for an Orthodox-wanting-to-become-Lutheran to become Mormon.

Defense of Certain Statements About Liberal Catholics...

Well I guess that depends on your definition of "Roman Catholic". There clearly are some liberal RCs who have not been excommunicated, and thus are in full communion with the Pope. On the other hand, some would say that (despite not having been excommunicated) those people are not real Roman...

Roman Centrality, the RCC and Orthodox Church

Personally, I find it quite surprizing that he calls that "the best argument".

Are you asking this in response to Jim's statement

    did this teaching change?

I think the reasons are more complicated than you realize. That ^^ is part of it, no doubt, but I think a couple other reasons that people pay so much attention to Cantate Domino are: - its connection with the Council of Florence - the fact that some believe it to be an ex cathedra statement

Another thought ... I don't know how many Papal Bulls there have been in total (I just spent some time trying to find out, without success; if any of you know I'd be most obliged if you'd tell me) but it's clear that there have been a lot. So why does Cantate Domino receive so much attention?

If you're looking at all statements that have been made by Popes, certainly you're going to find false statements. However, this thread isn't about all statements that have been made by Popes, it's about Cantate Domino (and to some extant Unam Sanctum, since that's been mentioned a number of times).

I think you need to re-read my question (quoted below). I don't deny that many Catholics spout out so-called explanations of Cantate Domino that are completely illogical. I'm looking for one example of a well-respected Catholic theologian who does so. Originally Posted by Catholic_NE Can...

Can you provide an example of a well-respected Catholic theologian (not counting randoming people like myself posting on a discussion forum :)) who tap dances around what those Popes actually meant?

Cantate Domino doesn't say whether they are or aren't. It simply says that those who are outside the Church will go to hell unless before death they are joined with the Church.

Hi MoNiCa4316, I think my post #91 is self-explanatory -- if read in conjunction with what I was responding to -- so I won't add-on extra comments about it. But I would like to comment on the following: That's a very good question. The best explanation I can come up with is that sometimes...

People who aren't baptized are damned, but we hope God will have mercy on them? What do you mean, like send them to a milder portion of hell? Or did you mean, We hope that God will have mercy on those who aren't baptized, by giving them the grace to be baptized before the end of their lives...

    The Pope

Far be it from me to say that it's okay for people to call the Holy Father an apostate; but I think the question being asked here is whether it's allowed according to forum rules.

:) (BTW, for anyone like me who didn't get the acronym right away, WWMC is Whosoever Will, May Come (the Liberal forum).) I wonder if they've ever created a sub-forum in Bridge Builders - Moderate Christians for moderate Catholics. JK ;)
