    Are All Soldiers Heroes?

I saw this clip posted on a social media site, from Memorial Day: MSNBC Chris Hayes I'm 'Uncomfortable' Calling Fallen Military 'Heroes' - YouTube In it, Chris Hayes states: Thoughts? Is he correct? I think that it's a really interesting point, and a conversation worth having. Are all...

Best Online Tools to Remain Politically Aware?

After a local bill (SB0089) passed through the Indiana Senate before hitting my radar, I realized I needed my political information stream to be a bit faster than it is. News brings up controversial legislation, but doesn't always catch the local or more obscure stuff. I got an account at...

Would you like to see Ron Paul as Secretary of Defense?

Just what the title says. I've always supported his foreign policy, but felt that his domestic policy wasn't all that well thought out. His odds of winning a primary are also pretty low. But if a candidate put him in as Secretary of Defense, I'd be a very happy camper indeed. Your thoughts?

    Are Jobs Obsolete?

The article lacks some nuance, but the basic point is worth considering and discussing, I think. Does the increased productivity brought about by industrialization and robotics render traditional labor models less and less relevant as time goes on?

    July 9th

Today, 31 years ago, Sharia law was enacted in Iran. I saw a bunch of anti-revolution protests in Stockholm today, so I thought I'd mention it.

Rolling Upgrade vs. Build and Forget

A friend of mine is wanting to build herself a new desktop, and I and a few of her friends agreed to help her. The decision she's currently trying to make is whether to go for a rolling upgrade build, or a build-and-forget build. She's wondering which is more cost effective over time. I'm not...

    Obama's Budget Proposal

I just watched Obama give a speech about his budget proposal. Despite the disappointment that Obama has been over the years, I'm generally in favor of his proposals. What did you like/dislike? I liked: Reform the tax code to limit the deduction system that favors those who can afford...

Is "The money cannot be used for X" just a lot of hot air?

Given that money is fungible, isn't it impossible (or at the very least, extremely improbable) to subsidize one activity an organization engages in, without also subsidizing any other activities said organization engages in? Examples: "We will subsidize Planned Parenthood, but the money...

    Breaking Election Conversation

Well this is interesting... Granted, most of the results are still pending, but currently fivethirtyeight reports that the Dems have gained a seat in the house, while losing a seat in the Senate. This isn't crazy news, of course, but I thought it might be nice to have a thread for current...

Who here is likely to vote cross-party tomorrow?

Come on, we all know that the odds of every candidate on every level of government from the same party being the best candidate is a long shot, at best. So what cross-party candidates are you supporting tomorrow? If you just can't bring yourself to vote across the aisle, who's the closest...

Full Story Well, it looks like George Carlin's 7 dirty words are finally legal to broadcast, at least in the second circuit (New York, Connecticut, and Vermont). The Second Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the rule was vague and had a chilling effect on First Amendment rights. It'll likely...
