Relationship of Warrant and Claim in Maintaining Tradition?

General question - I'm interested in particular in hearing (not debating, though I may ask follow-up questions for clarity) from the more traditionalist posters here, though others are welcome to chime in. To what degree do we, as Orthodox Christians, feel it necessary to adopt not just the...

Free Resource for Patristic Use of Scripture

Hello all, Here's an online, searchable index of early Christian use of the scriptures. It takes some getting used to, and you have to make an account (though it is completely free), but it is really, really helpful once grasped. Two other problems: it provides only the reference / point...

    Quick Question

If you can find a couple of people who are Orthodox or are inquirers, one might also seek out the nearest bishop and ask to have a priest come around periodically to do sacraments. One can also organize (fairly easily) basic reader's services, which don't require a priest or deacon, to do on a...

    The Bible

Well, to be fair, I said RCC's. I'd agree (by and large) about the lack of Biblical literacy among Orthodox Christians. For the record, I dislike Clark Carlton's general polemical approach, but on to the actual question: The simplest answer, which is valid at the time of the development...

    The Bible

Right, but what you are labeling as liberalism was actually a Protestant movement (that is, a movement within Protestantism and supported by Protestant sects). The fight between Biblical Criticism and its opponents was, for the most part, largely a fight within Protestantism about how best to...

    The Bible

That depends on what you mean by "weaken" and "the witnesses of scripture." Those are rather loaded terms (as is "grab for authority" for that matter). Some (many) of the most Scriptural minds I have had the privilege of knowing have been RCC's. To put it in the categories of the...

    Does God love the devil

Yes. God loves the Devil. Without question. Nothing (nothing) we can do can stop God from loving us. Now, how we experience that love is another matter - the real question, then, is does the Devil hate himself? As the father of lies, does his delusional behavior mean he is a victim of...

    Blessed Feast !

Blessed Feast! Still one of my all-time favorite iconographic traditions - the way Christ holds her as His child just as she held Him in His infancy. Hope of all Christians indeed! What else could we hope to be other than a true child of God, held close to Christ in His mercy and care?

Not so! My current parish follows the Julian calendar, though my family is more accustomed to the Revised so we're kind of 50/50.

    The Times are a Changin'

Yeeeahhh.... Rus I really don't think you understood me. I was (and have generally been) actually saying that the current conservative position is actually pretty liberal relative to world history - that we, as the church, have already liberalized in our presuppositions. I use liberal and...

    The Times are a Changin'

I agree with some of the thrust of the article (esp. the basic and main point that "self-expression" isn't an Orthodox virtue and has become a supreme value of mainstream American culture, even trumping the value of life itself). I don't, though, agree with the Dreher quote (surprise!) since he...

    Blessed Feast !

Blessed Feast! This is perhaps, apart from Pascha, my favorite feast of the year (this or Annunciation). Sorry I'm a day late...

    Documentaries on the early Church?

None that I'd recommend. Most of the documentaries are made with a "conspiracy theory" mindset (e.g. to undermine the church) or, instead, with an overly simplistic "polemic" style that reduces the history to arguments in favor of one church or another.

You can lead a toddler to bacon, but you cannot make her feast.

    The Truth about Yoga

Given the way religion and life are interwoven in most pre-secular societies, I don't know that it is possible to 100% divorce them, but neither do I find that particularly troubling, since our own faith contains already so man baptized elements of pre-Christian religion. That is, once...

Oh a nice spiced rum does sound tasty... Incidentally, I felt like a failure as a father until today, when my daughter finally tried bacon for the first time and, naturally, loved it.

    The Truth about Yoga

I know some Catholic high schools offer it as a PE elective, but remove or Christianize the spirituality.

    The Truth about Yoga

I might differentiate between "yoga" as a set of stretching and strengthening exercises, and Yoga as a spiritual discipline (generally referring to Raja Yoga, a form of Hindu practice). I know the two often get conflated (that is, "exercise" yoga is rife with Hindu Yoga as part of its marketing...
