How do you celebrate your Nameday!?

I go to church! My namesday is almost always on the Sunday after Nativity (Prophet David), except when Nativity's on a Sunday (then it's on the 26th). I pray the Akathist to Prophet David the Sat. night before, wife usually gets me something Orthodox-y...meal somewhere nice...

    I'm back! :-)

What orphanage is this? How long would it take to send things there? What kind of things could/should be sent? God bless you in what you've done so far for these beautiful children. So wonderful to see Orthodox ministering to our own in these countries.

    I'm Scared...

I second the reading of the psalms. No. 64-69 (that's 65-70 in Protestant Bibles) are wonderful for remembering the glory and sovereignty of God. You can read a great version of these particular psalms (easy to chant, too) right here. Here's the whole psalter, too.

    Masturbation

Regarding ways to redirect lust from things you see...the desert fathers talk a lot about how we'll return to dust, old age and then the grave will be our common end (before the resurrection, of course)...it helps me (when I actually think to do this) to remember that the pretty young thing I...

OCA proclaims that the Theotokos is sinless ...

This used to scandalize me, until I realized something (if y'all will pardon a perhaps unusual interpretation of Matt. 14:22-33): If we're all called to leave the sinking boat (this world and its destructive lusts) and walk towards Christ, doing and being by grace what He is by nature (in the...

    OrthodoxCircle: "Pay Up!"

Glad to see that some resistance is building up. I love the site and what it stands for, but I wouldn't stick around if I had to pay, either. It was billed originally as an Orthodox MySpace...but...MySpace doesn't charge you for use, sooooo...

    Scripture

Wow...quite a lot here... Well, I for one think we should do more of that. St. John Chrysostom said that "ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ." I think the Hail Mary/Our Father thing is good, but have her read James 5:14-15: St. James says that we can't just "do it...

Vote for the New OSB Cover

Um...isn't it against the canons to bind the Gospels in the skins of dead animals? Correct me if I'm wrong...this was mentioned...somewhere in the past...by...someone...as a criticism of the leatherbound versions of the NT/Psalms (I know, I know, lots of help...) Seriously?! Woah... Mmm...

Vote for the New OSB Cover

I'm with the ones who said #1 looked more traditional, like what the priest processes with in church. Good to see it's winning, imo...;-) Keep 'em coming!

Xpycoctomos -- you and I are alike in several ways, then! Along with teaching Spanish, I'm known to forget a name or two, too...one of my best students is named Precious. Been calling her that all year, no problem, but the past couple of weeks have caught me wanting to call her PATIENCE...

    Is THIS Orthodoxy?!

A Synod is the college of bishops in a particular jurisdiction/regional/national church. For example, here is the page for the holy synod of bishops in the OCA.
