Does any of the former Roman Catholics know the premise or thought process saying that you will be giving something up for Lent? I'm curious about the reason.

I often hear those who are Roman Catholic they are giving up something for Lent. Is this the proper terminology to use for the period of Lent. If not, what should be said instead.
