    Finished!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats!!! Hey, remember - the first draft of everything is bad. Stephen King said that, but with a bit more colorful language that I can't use here :D :P But yeah, don't write off your story so easily! No one's first draft is as near as good as the final, so take a well-deserved break and...

    describe....

Read 'If You Want to Write' by Brenda Ueland. Pretty good book, if a bit rambly, but it helps you see that comparing yourself to big-shot writers doesn't get you far. Write things how you see them, not how you think you 'should' be seeing them. And not all books are full of flowery description...

    Ideas...

Ideas can come from anywhere, really. I've gotten them from weird places, and I've gotten them randomly in a way I'm not really sure how to attribute. Do you have an iPod or iTunes on your computer? Shuffle all your music. Listen to the first song that grabs you - listen all the way through...

    A writer's life for me

How is everyone? I haven't been around too much, I know...what's new? I'm editing a novel I finished a month-ish back, and I've started a new one since. I'm having a blast with it. It's an urban fantasy.

I am going to kill him!

^_^ Yeah, they talk back sometimes. I was editing a scene with a not-very-nice character the other day. I told her, "You know what? You're a terrible person. You have no excuses or rights to justify any of what you're saying right now." I heard her reply quite clearly in my head: "Your point?"

I am going to kill him!

:D I understand completely. I'm working on a new story these days, and 13k in a new character strolled on set, pulled out a chair and plopped himself down in the middle of everything. I'd very much like to kick him. I tried, actually. He just won't budge. Can this be an official...

    So Today

A third...wow. What was the word count of your first draft? Thanks :) Good luck (and fun) to you too!

    So Today

I'm enjoying it, yeah :D I'm only six chapters in and I've lost a lot of word weight - almost 1,000.

    So Today

...I thought I posted something thanking you all...weird. A lot of my posts have gotten eaten by the server lately, though. Idk why. But thanks guys! Belated's cool too :) I'm editing my guts out now...

    So Today

...I finished my first draft of my latest novel. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D And I wanted to share my utter ecstaticness (yes, I know the word is ecstasy :P) with all of you :P I'm very happy, and am currently considering revision methods. :) Thanks for bearing with me.

    What to say...

Lol wow. I can't believe this thread's still around. A lot of it is chalked up to personal preference, GrinningDwarf, but Paolini is bad, imo, by standards of predictable storytelling, boring-ness, poor character development and even grammar. No, not everything has to be a classic, but it...

    Writer's Roll Call

Sounds a lot like me - almost exactly, actually :D Except I'm only about halfway done with my degree. I want to work in publishing and write novels on the side.

    Backstory

Heh - yeah, no angst-ridden conversations :P What I try to do is try to discern which parts of the backstory I need to know versus which parts the reader needs to know. One thing I've found through sharing my work with people is that a lot of the elaborate backstoryage I used to do isn't always...

    Aaaaaaaaaargh

 I go through phases like that in and out. I think it's a good thing, honestly; as long as you don't let it discourage you from working on your craft still. Doubt can lead to a desire to be better, and a desire to be better can lead to you working harder and improving. Ever think about...

    Favourite Author

I never know what to say when people ask me my favorite authors. I read all over the board and try new ones all the time, and just because I like one book by an author doesn't mean I like all their others. I don't think I imitate any other writing styles, at least not consciously...

    The Effects of Media...

...On your work. Here's a new thread for us, since I'm so happy we're coming to life again. In what ways have books, movies, music, or whatever else affected your writery ideas? I'm not one for fanfiction or working with pre-made characters, but sometimes watching a war movie makes me want to...
