    saying I'm appalled is insufficient

I hear ya. Right now my wife and I attend a Methodist church with my family as there aren't any Reformed churches (or anything close to one) within an hour drive. It's hard to sit through the service without leaving (I've only left once so far). I keep reminding myself that despite all of the...

    Incarnational Theology

I'm going to have to defer to someone else here if you want a rapid response. I haven't studied the intricacies of this topic and its opposing views enough to argue it intelligently.

It's a sin. What are we debating here?

The Fall of Adam and Eve

For the state of Adam and Eve pre-Fall, I would point to the Westminster Confession, Chapter IX, Section II : "Man, in his state of innocency, had freedom, and power to will and to do that which was good and well pleasing to God; but yet, mutably, so that he might fall from it." Yes, it is a...

    Incarnational Theology

Not as you would have it defined. When Paul here says that the "fullness of deity dwells bodily", he is stating that God in times past had only been manifested in part, now is manifested wholly. As Calvin notes in His commentary, if anyone then seeks something beyond Christ, he seeks something...

What Good? and can it be wrong?

Foregoing the rest of your post for a moment- do realize that you are engaging in the same type of thinking that you have said you "feel sorry" for in others? Specifically, you appear to advocate an open mindset and blame chaos on those who think they know truth. Yet, to make such a...

    The Calvin loophole.

Hey Frogger, Calvinists don't claim that people shouldn't be called to repentance. God chooses to use the ordinary means of preaching the gospel in conjunction with the Holy Spirit to sovereignly regenerate His people. Those who hear the gospel that He does not regenerate will inevitably be...

    The Calvin loophole.

I don't know what you are referring to with Romans 7:5. The Romans 7 section, note that Paul is here speaking in the present tense - i.e. after this regeneration. He is talking about how Christians, even with the Holy Spirit, still war with sin due to our flesh. The unbeliever has no desire...

    The Calvin loophole.

Again, you are arguing from your own presuppostions - not scripture. "If God commands us to do something, then by default we must have the ability in and of ourselves to do it." This is not based anywhere in scripture, and if it were true we could also keep all of God's law. Such a claim is...

    The Calvin loophole.

There is a sense in which all men do know God, but this is not the knowledge that needs to be grown in and of itself. Rick Otto pointed correctly to this scripture: Romans 1:20 "For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been...

    The Calvin loophole.

I think you may be cherry picking a section out of context. In the very next sentence, Calvin writes "But what has this to do with the kingdom of God? What has it to do with a happy life, so long as every sentiment of the mind, and every act of the will, is death? " Yes there is an active...

Is philosophy mostly for young 'uns?

I would agree. I think this largely has to do with our public education system. Philosophy is seldom if ever taught. We're taught to know facts and memorize them, not to account for our worldview and its implications. I think recent generations are beginning to find the bankruptcy of such...

    Back again....

Thanks for the "heads up" on the Soteriology forum. I hadn't posted in there yet - it's kind of like trying to time when to jump into the swinging jump rope without getting whacked in the legs or head.

    Back again....

Thanks. Looking around in some other familiar stomping grounds, it looks like there are a higher ratio of Calvinists now than there was a few years back. Am I dreaming?

    Expelled

I thought it was an interesting documentary. Exposing the sheer prejudice of the supposed "objective" scientific community was useful. It was a frustrating hearing only the Intelligent Design argument that was void of scripture and presuppositional arguments. Overall, I thought it was worthwhile.

    The Mortification of Sin

I read this a few months back. I figured since it wasn't real long, I'd breeze right through. Man was I wrong. It was a very humbling book for me. I could only get through small sections at a time before my conscience gripped me again. While it is not for the faint of heart, it is a...
