Visiting an Antiochian Orthodox Church this Sunday...

Oh, sorry, then. I'm not familar with the Catholic Mass, so I guess I didn't understand what was being said in reference to. Context is always helpful!

Visiting an Antiochian Orthodox Church this Sunday...

Hi, I haven't been here for awhile, but just a quick note on this point. Actually, the Divine Liturgy is very structured. Of course, you have to be familiar with the service to realize this, and study it. I would reccomend reading an explanation of the Liturgy before you go. But of course, now...

    Pre-Sanctified Gifts in the Evening.

St. John Chrysostom R.O. C in St. Louis. Not to be confused with the Church of St. Basil the Great.

    Pre-Sanctified Gifts in the Evening.

When my father serves Pre Sanctified Liturgies in the evening, he fasts all day, from midnight on. I've heard of other priests doing that too, so I guess there's some varience.

    Other controversial Orthodox writers?

Florensky is also controversial, but sainted by ROCOR. This is not true, that is, that we have cannonized him.

by their fruits ye shall know them

Well, it's true that all of us, or at least me could and should do more to help the poor. However, as the others have said the fruits of the Spirit are not just almsgiving, but, “ love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance” And these we see...

    Pastoral Letter from SCOBA

I do not have children myself, but my (limited) experience with homeschooled kids suggests that homeschooling works in direct proportion to the thoughtfulness and diligence the parents put into their children's education. This is absolutely true. We were homeschooled and I thank God, but I...

Who is looking forward to Forgiveness Sunday?

I have to tell a funny story. My father was rushing to get to church for Forgiveness Vespers one year, to start the service, and he got a speeding ticket. We were telling this to another priest and he joked, that my father should have said to the policeman if it were an Orthodox country...

    Iconography

I just want to post the website of Fr. Paul Akmolin, who just finished two absolutely beautiful icons for our church of St. John of San Francisco and St. John Chrysostom. http://www.christthesavior.net/iconpage/icon_index.html

    Question to my Orthodox family!

This is the reason that Orthodox Christians and Coptic Christtains are not the same Church. We anathematized Dioscorus, and do not consider him a saint. You do. We cannot say we are the same church if one anathematizes someone and the other cannonizes him. We thus do not believe the same things.

    Anyone else see this? Authentic?

St Theopylact, who wrote the classic Orthodox commentary on the Gospels, said that St. John did know who Christ was, havng known Him while yet in the womb, but that he asked that question of Christ through his disciples for their sake. Thus hearing His answer and seeing His wokrs they would know...

A sweet soul who, God willing, will become Orthodox in the next year, needs prayer...

Oh, I forgot about Sts Cosmos and Damian, who were not only saints and twins but unmercenary healers at that! Very appropriate. : ) These were the ones from Arabia by the way, since there are several sets of Sts Cosmos and Damian who were unmercenary healers. I think there's 3 sets in fact.

A sweet soul who, God willing, will become Orthodox in the next year, needs prayer...

Dear Katherine, I'm praying for you all! That's so cool that you're having twins! I love being a twin! I'm just writing to recommend you praying to Sts. Gervasius and Protasius, who were twins that were missionaries to the area around Paris. So you have twins that are saints praying for your...

    Priest and Confession?

It's funny, reading what you have written because actually it was the opposite reason that I stopped going to confession to my father. It was too easy. We have a close family and I tell him everything anyway, so when I went to confession it was like I was just talking to him. There should be a...

    Priest and Confession?

There's no hard and fast rule for priests families either way. Priests families are encouraged to go to another priest generally but there exceptions. For example, I call my confessor on the phone for confession, but when I can't reach him, I go to my dad which is no problem.

    J. W. 's

You know it's funny, J.W. once came to our door and my mom just simply said that her husband is a priest and we were very dedicated to the Orthodox Church. They actually were interested because they hadn't heard about married priests and she talked to them for quite awhile. One man sows, and...
