    Down to Earth Skills

The biggest thing is learning to work with and depend upon others. Without electricity, self sufficiency is fools game. Once I run out of acetylene in my tank, my cutting torch is useless. Once i run out of gas for the genset, using a bellows on my forge means it will take much longer to get...

    Angry at everything

The first few months are often pretty brutal. There can be a real temptation to try and shortcut grief. The challenge in doing so, as that it will come back, and when it does, is the unintended consequences are often a lot harder the next go round than what might have been if you engaged with it...

Pastoral care of folks with Covid

The basic's are key, but with loss of taste and smell, its may be worth exploring a variety of food and drink. It is exceedingly important that folks keep eating and staying hydrated in the home environment. The other thing is, that depending upon symptoms, speech can end up being pretty...

How do you hold it together?

Grieving the loss of a spouse is so individual. A buddy of mine lost his wife about 18 months ago, and he is doing ok, vs it took me a few years to get to where he is at today. A few random bits from my experience. Brain chemistry went whacko. My fight/flight response cranked up and remained...

Is it wrong to change the bible's words to a more simpler form??

Putting the scriptures in your own words, is a great way to learn, especially so if you can bounce them off a few other folks in your faith community. What will happen, is you will see if you are getting the overall concepts down, or if maybe you are seriously missing something when you discuss...

    Kissing before marriage?

I don't think God has an issue with it, short of the stuff you mentioned. After all, Songs of Solomon is in the Bible, and its pretty conclusive the young lovers in it aren't married. That being said, local cultures / faith community / tradition forms a lens as to how we read the scriptures...

    Streaming services vis facebook live

I do freelance camera work for a TV studio, where we have 5 figure encoders and pro gear. Its a cakewalk, but they shut down us freelance guys... Thus, what was a great deal for church pre you know what,,, but I no longer have access to that stuff, thus I'm doing stuff on the extreme cheap end...

Needing Advice - What would you do? Th

If the pastor is innocent, ie clicked wrong while scrolling, or someone is messing with him/her, they need to be aware that its showing up in their like list to fix it. Doing nothing potentially puts him at risk at some point down the road... If not innocent, which is possible, being that over...

    Being photographed at church

For some folks its a matter of safety / security. As a part time event photographer / camera guy for a tv station, capturing the wrong person, especially as my station will be streaming online, is a real concern for me. Someone mentioned upthread about using lanyards and I'm a huge fan. It...

Is sexual promiscuity solely the arena of more liberal Christianity?

Anecdotally I disagree with this. My peer group as a young guy when was a bunch of WWII vets, many of whom were Christian. And while their churches growing up taught abstinence until marriage, they ignored it, often times quite proudly. The girl in every port... well that was pretty common with...

    Opioid crisis

In part, physician rankings which included pain control governed reimbursement... so if the docs pay is tied to making patients comfortable, then that's what they are going to do, even if it might be a bit on the high side of things. Today, that system is no longer the case... A surgeon friend...

Is sexual promiscuity solely the arena of more liberal Christianity?

Kids rarely understand consent, rarely understand reproductive science / birth control, have raging hormones, and are often easy manipulated into sexual activity. Thus to prevent unwanted pregnancy, STD's and limit abortion rates and the number of deadbeat dads, this is where the greatest focus...

Business Men and Women of God. I need help

Lots of folks have ideas, few ever implement them, even fewer reach the point of paying customers, and only a tiny number actually make a go of it. As most business folks are time pressed... why not post your elevator speech out here in public where we can discuss it as a group and provide...

Is sexual promiscuity solely the arena of more liberal Christianity?

Conservative US Evangelicals are big on moral therapeutic deism, especially so when it comes to preaching about sexual moral values... so in that domain, its more of a conservative problem than a liberal one. Outside of conservative circles at large, MTD is not taught as much... rather I think...

Is sexual promiscuity solely the arena of more liberal Christianity?

But turning a church into an intentional sin pool to prevent a small number of kids engaging in premarital sex is the wrong answer. Its like the lies put forth in the sexual purity movements... anything goes in order to prevent pre-marital sex, which while it can work in the short term comes...

Is sexual promiscuity solely the arena of more liberal Christianity?

And thus later marriage is likely to reduce divorce rates as it gives folks more time for brain chemistry to slow, plus more time to hopefully practice self control. However, this poses major problems for the churches who turn familys into idols.

    Bucket list

I can sort of relate. My late wife was paralyzed / bed confined for her last 11 years... so any sense of a bucket list was pretty much gone. Rather than planning, our fun stuff had to rely more on the ability to execute on a moments notice when she was having a good day, or a good few hours...

Guidance needed. I'm Catholic. She's Mormon. Is a relationship ever gonna work?

Interfaith relationships are a challenging, even more so if one or both parties are especially devout. Adding children to the mix makes it even more complicated. This doesn't mean its impossible, but that you will have many struggles and things to work through that couples from the same faith...

Too Bad This Isn't Standard Capitalist Thinking

All of the above ring true at times... I bought a Harbor Freight and Salvage (yes that was its name back in the early 80's) set of pozidrive screwdrivers and ruined one on the first use.... so I bought a Snap On set at 20X the price. As it turned out, that set has remained in my toolbox having...
