What are they? I'm a Christian, and my best friend was recently baptized into the Mormon church. I'd like to be able to talk to her about it--in fact, she's bringing some elders to my house later this week. So if you could help me with some Mormon beliefs and/or biblical responses/support of those beliefs, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks.

Hello. I would be glad to try and help you understand one thing that I've learned about the God(s) of Mormonism. It's something that I learned from many talks with the missionaries who came to my house. I learned that they believe that Jesus is God like we believe. But they believe that since Jesus is Jehovah (YHWH), the "God of the Old Testament", then Jehovah must have a father. But there's a major problem with this belief.

First of all, we know that Jehovah is the only God that exists (see Isaiah 43 & 44). Secondly, we know that Jehovah is the Father of Jesus because Jesus sits at His right hand (see Psalm 110:1 cf. Matthew 22:41-45). Thirdly, we know that Jesus is also Jehovah (see John 1:1, John 8:58 cf. Exodus 3:14).

Remember, there's one important key to this...

Anytime in the Old Testament when you see "the LORD" with all capital letters, the original Hebrew is "YHWH" (Jehovah).

I'll be praying for you, your best friend, and for the missionaries.

There is one God, not three. His Name is "YHWH". He is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

blessings,
matt

Below I am giving the address for the Utah LightHouse Ministries. This is run by a couple that left the mormon church many years ago and has since then been used of God to help thousands out of the clutches of their cult. You can also type into google such things as

mormon temple ceremony

joseph smith failed prophecies

and many other topics. Good luck. Dont let those young men get to you with their "testimony." It is one of the fall backs when they find themselves not knowing what to say next.

Mormons and Christendom (the churches) have very different doctrines, but their actions are very similiar.

They are both part of the world. Very nationalistic, very political, and very military.

True Christianity on the other hand, is no part of this world. They form a united worldwide brotherhood in which they do not get involved in national affairs, be it political or the military. They are peaceful and advocate only God's kingdom as the only government that will be able to achieve true peace and security on this planet.

I read somewhere they are against blacks?

Originally the Mormons were all set apart from the blacks. But like much of Mormon doctrine when it became polictically incorrect they change it over and over.

There is a reason why one man is born black and with the other disadvantages, while another is born white with great advantages. The reason is that we once had an estate before we came here, and were obedient, more or less, to the laws that were given us there. Those who were faithful in all things there received greater blessings here, and those who were not faithful recieved less. - Joseph Fielding Smith - 10th LDS President

In 1966, Bruce McConkie(ordained an apostle in 1972) his book Mormon Doctrine said"The negroes are not equal with other races where the receipt of certain spiritual blessings are concern . . .but this inequity is not of man's orgin. It is the Lord's doing."

The Negro is an unfortunate man. He has been given a black skin. But that is as nothin compared with the great handicap that he is not permitted to receive the Priesthood and the ordinances of the temple, necessary to prepare men and women to enter and enjoy a fullness of glory in the celestial kingdom - George Richards - Mormon Elder

Mormonism is like any religion in which men attempt to reshape christiainity to comform to there own policital agenda and religious viewpoints.

If you can't stick just with the Bible, than don't call or put yourself out as a Christian.

Mormonism like Islam is very suspect as far as authenticity... Well I know for a fact (because of Christ) that they're both false but let's look at these logically... Mormonism and Islam were both "God's" revelation to one man (Joseph Smith and Mohammed)... How is that trustworthy? Christianity is different in the sense that there were many eyewitnesses to Jesus' resurrection and more than one man was involved in jotting down God's revelations... nuff said

What you have to watch out in getting the truth in religion is the traditional beliefs that are not part of actual scriptual doctrine.
Watch out for things such as when questioning a religious leader something of faith he may say, "Well, the church believes......" make sure what he says is actually backed up with biblical scripture and taken in the correct context and do not blindly accept the traditional dogma given and always be ready to question. God expects no less as your duty to seek the truth not just be told what the truth is.
