i thought it may be a good idea to start some bible application questions discussion, like the bible studies in church. This way we can throw in heaps of ideas on specific verses, and have some in-depth discussion??
well, we'll see how it goes, when a discussion dies, i'll (or you guys) throw in the next question. ;)

Colossians 1:10 (background reading: Colossians 1:1-14)
And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.

Interpretation Question to be answered by yourself:
What do we do to live a life worthy of the Lord?

Application Question(s):
How do we live a life worthy of the Lord? (in general and specifically?)

um, first we must avoid doing things that aren't pleasing to Him, so that means.. don't sin. "Growing in knowledge", bible knowledge?
i definitely need to read the bible more. um, on a more personal level, i also need to put my heart into serving Him. Not that i don't care, i even enjoy doing the things, but sometimes it just feels as if He's miles away..
oh yeah, and impatience is one of my weak points. I can get impatient easily when it comes to things with deadlines set!

I'll jump in even though I am new to the forum.

>>How do we live a life worthy of the Lord? (in general and specifically?)<<

I don't think that you can make a list of things that you can do that will equal living a life worthy of the Lord. I wish it were that simple.

Bottom line is not sinning isn't an easy thing to do, if it is even possible at all. However, in the midst of our sinful lives if we are somehow able to love others unconditionally and give glory to God at the same time, we will live a life worthy of the Lord.

The very reason Paul wrote the letter to the Colossians was to refute a heresy that had developed in their fellowship. Yet in the midst of this "sin" of false beliefs/doctrines, he was able to commend them for their faith and love, and pray that they would live a life worthy of the Lord.

One of the things I have learned recently is it is your life itself that measures your devotion to God. Not just the time you spend at church, doing ministry, or helping someone in need. It is your whole being both the awesome sides of you and the not so great parts of you.

So what do we do to live a life worthy of the Lord? Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. Like I said earlier, much easier said then done, especially the second part. ;)

well said awacky! and Welcome to CF!

yes, that last point you made is indeed hard to do, um, just a thought here though, loving your neighbor may be an indication of how much one loves God, what i mean is, the two things cannot be separated entirely.

I think it's hard to answer this one in the affirmative without being prideful. "Well, I do this and that to make myself worthy of the Lord." In fact, if we were able to be worthy of the Lord, we'd never need Jesus in the first place! ;)

So, it's better and easier to say what we do that makes us UNWORTHY of the Lord. And that can only have one answer--we continue to sin.

But here's the good news! God continues to forgive!

And THAT'S what makes us worthy of the Lord. :)

it's easy to love your family (that is, if they were lovable!) than your enemies (maybe that's too strong a word, just people that one dislikes). :(

which exposes the things that we need to improve on in order to please Him. Very good point there Lambslove! however, just a thought here, i think what makes us worthy of the Lord does not lie in God's forgiveness alone. What we DO in our lives after we've been changed by Him should reflect His glory. Thus why Paul said in Colossians, to bear good fruits and grow in Him.

Blessed One,
I agree with you about reading the Bible more. I have been studying with the help of a guide (rather than simply reading through) and I have been surprised how much it has helped. I have also discovered so much meaning in some Genesis texts to which I had hardly given an second though to before.
One of the problems we humans have with trying to live a life worthy of the Lord is that we tend to substitute formulas for real living. We tend to look for the "magic" rituals that are guranteed to please God then end up going through the motions instead of engaging honestly with our failings or difficult issues.
BTW Great Topic!

yes, it's amazing, i mean, the things that come leaping out of the bible when one digs deep enough. :)

that going through the motions bit is sooo true! sometimes it seems like to be avoiding the issue or just being plain lazy...
human failings.. we need to be reminded by God all the time, lol.

Thank you for this interactive study blessed one :)
A very interesting question.

Col. 1:3-6 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
when we pray for you, because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all the saints — the faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in heaven and that you have already heard about in the word of truth, the gospel that has come to you. All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God’s grace in all its truth.

Looking at this passage it seems to key to living a life worthy of the Lord is Faith , Love and Hope.

It is our faith in his transforming power, the power of his sacrifice and resurection. It is faith in the fact that he will transform us. the the lord will sanctify us. just as we could never save ourselves, he cannot live a worthy life on our power. Only the Holy Spirit working with in us can truely change us.

Ga. 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but
Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in
the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Love is another key. It is a growing love for the Lord. The Love of the Lord transforms our life. In return we love more. We Love God more, we loves other more. again it is the power of christ that transforms us and builds in a worthy life. (!st corinthians 13 explains this well)

also Hope grows in us. The hope of eternal life. The hope of greater knowledge and love of the Lord. Hope of freedom from sin that bind us.

What to I do??
ultimately it becomes a matter of surrender to the will of the Lord. There are some areas in my life i resist. where I resist , there will be no growth. Where I submit the Lord will mold me and bulid me. Sometimes the Lord's will is tough. sometimes it is easier to live in denial and selfishness. But ultimately i would live a life of short term numbness for long term pain. The Lord's way is often one of painful growing for long term joy and peace.

surrender to the will of God! that's one thing i seriously need to do when it comes to big decisions in life. I tend to not follow Him if i found it difficult and scary.... what you said there about long term pain, and long term joy and peace really nails the head. I'm at a crossroad right now, and God has used you as part of the things that He showed me lately. Thanks a lot BigEd, for sharing and pointing out about the need for faith, love and hope.
