The last post on this issue was getting a bit too big to read easily. Here is an attempt to bring some perspective into the debate. No harm in trying!

There are some advantages of being older. One is that you have seen what comes around again.

On the arguments for and against nudity the same arguments and same texts have been paraded on the forum that have been debated for the 40 years I have been aware of this issue amongst Christians. Here are some hoary reflections.

1. The most consistent exegesis of the Genesis story in accordance with the most respected principles of biblical interpretation is that the provision of clothing is God related, not man centred. It is the beginning of the great themes of sin and redemption that run throughout Scripture. To argue that God was primarily concerned about Adam’s ands Eve’ s shame at their nakedness before each other as the main theme of that part of the story is the most insignificant of the two possible interpretations.

2. Thus, the interpretation of nakedness elsewhere in Scripture should not be interpreted within a belief that justifies as normal or healthy a sense of shame at being naked. In some contexts that clearly is what is meant, but the context clearly limits any assessment of the shame as a universally justified emotion for any public nudity.

3. Cultural factors cannot be ignored. How many Christians opposing pubic nudity on the grounds that it promotes sexual excitement (lust) are aware that I cannot take a devout Muslim of Hindu to an average church service because that would be far too erotic for them - Sunday mornings the equivalent of a peep show? I can recall that nylon stockings, trousers for women, lipstick, one piece swimwear, and single dating have all been condemned on those grounds by the Christian community. Female ankles, long hair, knees and cleavage have all been deemed erotic (sinful) in the past. Are we all part of a backsliding church?

4. The undefined use of the word ‘lust’ is a hindrance to honest debate. It can often refer to sexual arousal, most obviously evidenced by the male erection. That this occurs readily in response to images of the female body is universally acknowledged. Therefore, the argument goes, men will be aroused by a naked female’s body. True. Thus, public nakedness will result in widespread sexual stimulation and lustful thoughts. We need to ask why this must be so? Is this as it should be? On this matter it is essential to take into account the actual experiences of christians who also claim to be nudists. They claim that open public nudity is not erotic, and does not automatically lead to breaking of Christian moral standards. They are either testifying to a valid experience, or they are being utterly untruthful. If the claim of christian nudists is an experiential reality, all Christians must accept what they say and evaluate it more honestly than what they have done so far. In the 70’s I attended (clothed) one of the popular counterculture festivals popular at that time, as part of a christian group wanting to evangelise attendees. Clothed Christians were seen ‘witnessing’ to naked youths – almost everyone was partly or completely naked. I did not see christians reduced to ineffectiveness due to constant sexual arousal. The entire atmosphere at the festival was virtually free of eroticism – much less so than at the average family beach or public swimming pool is today.

5. A trawl through the forum will show that sexual topics are the most popular by a very big margin. There is intense interest in sexual matters within the Christian community. Contradictions abound. Many christians oppose public nudity, yet many are getting their clothes off in one-on-one situations. Many christians oppose ‘lust’ and anything ‘lust arousing’, yet wear form revealing clothes to church, bikini’s at the beach, and use the internet for sexual material.

6. The real issue is not about some people’s preference for dispensing with clothes is suitable social situations. That is but a subset of the far wider issue of christians and sexuality. For me the real questions are:

Are christians comfortable with giving their children good sexual instruction?

Why are Christians as concerned about body image as non christians?

Why is there such a huge gap between church leadership and the younger generations on many aspects of sexuality and sexual morality?

How do we evaluate the fact that clothed christians today dress and behave in ways that would scandalise devout Christians of two or three generations ago? Where do you ‘draw the line’ when the line changes quite acceptably every few years?

Our hatred of nudity comes from centuries of mistranslation, misinterpreation, and taboos placed on the masses by people such as Saint Augustine, who, I have deduced, only imposed those disgusting restrictions on how a husband and wife may express their love for one another because he himself was a Eunich and therefore jealous.

Augustine was married and had a son. Yes, there has been a negative history within Christendom on many aspects of human sexuality. Recognising the past can be helpful, but what we need now are positive staments that Christians can accept and relate to today. I made this post in an attempt to focus a debate onto key issues that we should be earnestly reflecting on.

Good questions. your first question is probably the biggest reason I began a study on social nudity a few years ago. Now I have discovered, along with my wife that certain social nude activity is very healthy for our family. Beut we are careful of who we share this with because of the common misunderstadnings that the Christian community has.

My youngest boy would not even take his shirt off in front of us. That is how scared he was about his own nudity. We viewed this as very unhealthy, and even spooky. Now he is the most excited about going to the nude beach, or resort. And my wife can now be around the house in comfortable undress to any degree she feel she can without fear of shocking her boys.

It's wonderful!

Johnnz,

Since I discovered the concept of "Christian nakedness", or "naturism" a couple of years ago, and studied eveything I could about it, my life has changed immensly. I finally feel free from the clutches of this sexually depraved world and onece again complete and whole in my relationship with the Lord. This applied to my wife as well. We have both come out of our shell, so to speak and enjoy our time together when we couldn't be more open to God and others.

The sense of freedom has become a consuming fire and I really want to yell it from the mountains.

The thing about it is, I have known it in my heart for years, but was ignorant as to how to exactly express it. It wasn't until I was challenged a couple of years ago that I finally took the time to study scripture. Now I wish I had done it thirty years ago.

Thanks for opening this thread.

Son-cerely,
Nate

I feel the topic of "Christian Naturism" or "Christian views on Nudity" is important in today's world, since it IS our view of the interactions of human beings and our reactions to our bodies that seems to drive so many aspects of our daily lives.

THE FALL:
Ever since the fall of Adam and Eve, man has had a desire to hide aspects of our REAL SELVES from others and from God. We have done this though contact avoidance, our jobs, our homes and vehicles, cosmetics, posturing, altering our physical bodies through excercise, and through clothing (the topic of this thread). All of this is to cover up some "percieved" or actual "blemish" in our lives.

THE GREAT COVER-UP:

Adam and Eve tried in vain to hide their disobedience of God's command not to eat of the fruit of the tree of "knowledge of good and evil" by covering their bodies with leaves. This is still typical of humans today, in that whenever we do something that we know is wrong or will hurt a relationship with someone we love, we try to cover it up or purposely distract attention from it. This is evidenced by conversation that occured directly after the fall.
God: "Where are you?" (Gen 3:9)

Adam: "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid." (Gen 3:10)
God: "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?" (Gen 3:11)

Allright, the leaves obviously didn't work so, rather than appologize and admit his sin, Adam tries to shift the blame (childish diversionary tactics).
Adam "The woman you put here with me-she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it." (Gen 3:12)

Eve: "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."

It wasn't Adams "nakedness" that disturbed God. In fact, it was the fact that Adam had covered his body in an attempt to cover his sin, rather than simply confess and repent that angered God enough to curse them and eject them from the garden.
God to Eve: "I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing;

with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you."
(Gen 3:16)
God to Adam: "Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return." (Gen 3:17-19)

Please note that there is no curse requiring covering their bodies, also no law and no commandment further in scripture.

"NAKEDNESS" THROUGHOUT SCRIPTURE
Obviously, God's plan for "nakedness" is seen in a very positive light bo God, Himself, in the Genesis account. When God was finished with His creation, man was "NAKE and UNASHAMED". God went on to proclaim this creation to be "VERY GOOD". He allowed His prophets to prophesy "naked" and even commanded one or more to "preach naked" for as lon as three years.

Negative references to "nakedness" are either in conjunction with "sexual immorality" or metaphorical references to "exposure" of existing sinfulness, or "exposure" of one's defenses.

There are concerns about "modesty" which actually refer to over-dressing, more so than under-dressing.

This seems to be a major problem with society today. Most women (and some men) spend and average of 45 minutes in the morning, selecting the right clothing and primping, in order to look as good or better than their neighbors or work associates. Simply looking at typical fashion expenses tells the story well.

The question is...
"Since God is not put off by our naked bodies (His creation), and we are not commanded by Him to cloth our bodies, why do we feel compelled to dress, and why do WE get so upset at the sight of a naked human?"

Son-cerely,
Nate

Re some points of Johnnz :

1. I read that when having done wrong - whateever it was - it was Mans issue to cover up with rather poor means and Gods response to help out with gowns, but not making an issue of this help.

3. Maybe we should cultivate the proper attire in the right time on the right place : Someone in this forum drew the comparison to appearing before court - this is a matter of correct behaviour and decent conduct.

4. Lust - epithymia - is used by Bible authors and contemporary writers with a peiorative touch (except Lk 22 : 15, 1. Ti 3 : 1, I th 2 : 17 - ) and means "craving desire", "unreasonable longing" : We must maintain a difference between "accidently see" -"notice" - "like to see" - - "want to look " - "look with interest" - "look with pleasure" - "desire to look". Generations of kids had a guilty conscience just becauuse being curious, and this was multiplied by the educational message : "Nevernevernever look - -". A Nude is attractive -we should accept this - but then have to differ; I refute there is something "universally acknowledged". Beisdes : A Nude only is (was)an obstacle to believing Christians as long as it is a Caucasian; missionaries could illustrate books (Kotz :"Im Banne der Furcht", Hamburg 1922) or lectures (Gusinde about 1952 Vienna) with nude African natives, and nobody discussed "lust" or "a threat to youths healthful development."
The attraction does not necessarily lead to "lustful thoughts"; besides there is a Biblical remedy to epithymia : Enkrateia, self - control, unfortunately tranlslated with "chastity".

6. " - two or three generations ago" ? - Marie Antoinette, Princess of Austria, 1770 , in her midteens then, was completely undressed - stark nude - before the representatives of the Habsburg and the Bourbon courts when becoming married to the Dauphin and was dressed with new clothes, with every thread and button of French origin. This was a political act, nobody
thought of moral decay.

Teach and preach the holiness of every human being, the dignity to be perserved, the respect to be paid - - these lines never change nor changed - they today although find lesser respect . That is the crucial issue.

Cheers

It has been very interesting to read posts by Europeans on threads dealing with nudity. Their perspective is quite different and much more relaxed that the one held by many American contributors. They highlight once again that Christianity can be encased in cultural values, often without that fact being understood.

Their contrubution has been valuable. I live in a country (New Zealand, or more recently Middle Earth) where we have been undergoing a considerable evaluation of our cultural identity and values. That process has made me acutely aware of the many assumed values we have as part of our own cultural package. Our understanding of many doctrines can often contain views handed down from previous generations and automatically understood as "being what the bible says." I now accept that I must be much more careful bbefore I propound ona matter, and always sensitive to the difference views of others.

Prov 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

Many of us would rather jump off the anvil than engage in the sometimes unsettling process of honest debate and sincere contemplation.

Thank you European contributors

Only after being chalenged on this issue (nudity) and others, have I come to understand what you are talking about.

Like the pharisees, we have piled tons of "stuff" on top of the Laws of God, such that we can barely recognize His original intent any more.

Son-cerely,
Nate
