2Timothy 2:15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth

This is the NIV translation it uses the words ...correctly handles. If you read the verse in context it seems to be a caution to us. God did not reveal everything...some of us are guilty of filling in the gaps with what we think is true. Other times we have a tendency to place our own human emotions and desires on our God.

None of the above. It means "correctly understanding." So to be rightly dividing the word is to be correctly understanding the word. An archaic meaning of the word "divide" is "to discern the meaning of" or "understanding."

I am reading a book by Tolstoy, "What I Believe" in which he gives a synopsis of his understanding of the Gospels. He was a brilliant man with the capacity to understand all the words of the Gospel, but his writings clearly show that his understanding of the words missed the proverbial boat. He could not or did not "rightly divide" or "correctly understanding" the words.

Poor guy! So close to the truth, but missing it completely! He honestly believed that righteous living was the key to acceptance by God!

Okay, let me rephrase that. Tolstoy thought that the key to salvation was found in following these five commandments:

1. Don't commit adultry.
2. Don't swear an oath.
3. Don't let anyone see you praying or being nice.
4. Make ammends for your sins.
5. Practice non-violence.

By following these five things, you can erase years of disspipated living, according to Tolstoy, and become holy. He did not believe that Christ is God in the orthodox sense, but believed that everyone is the son of God if they do the five things above. In this way you become connected to the God-spirit that Jesus was connected to, and in this way, you achieve heaven.

Dear Inspectorvol;

Welcome to our ministry!

Sorry I took so long to answer, I have several posts and type with only one finger lol. While it's true that we are to "Correctly understand the word" we may understand the difference between law and grace, but not "Rightly dividing" both as far as aplying it to our doctrine. (John 1:17)

New Century Version says "true teaching" instead of "rightly dividing". "Correctly understanding" as in post 2 means the same thing to me also.
This has to do with the gift of discernment(1 Cor.), understanding. Not picking one verse & living like the Amish based on that one verse, but "rightly dividing" the truth, taking all verses as true & not being ashamed about it. (same verse).
Next verse, "vain babbling" isnt necessary.
To be able to take two seemingly conflicting verses & discern the true intent of the Holy Spirit/author=rightly dividing.
