To him belongs eternal praise.

Even on the cross someone knew to fear the Lord:
One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"
But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."
Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[6] "
Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."

Acts 9:
Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace. It was strengthened; and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it grew in numbers, living in the fear of the Lord.

Corinthians 5:
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men.

what does it mean to fear god? does that mean you should be afraid of him...like he's a bully? or what? this issue is rather confusing, because why would you need to fear a loving god?

For me, this means:
GOD will indeed, do exactly what HE said and says He will do . . .

He, will absolutely, send me straight to Hell, if I die with a Mortal sin on my soul . . .
:holy: ;)

God is good . . .
However, it's no game, when it comes to sin . . .

Happy Easter

According to one great theologian, the most repeated instruction in the bible is "do not be afraid". (I'm not sure how to check this, so I'll have to take his word for it.)

Look up the word 'Fear' in the strongs concordance and you will find that the word 'fear' meant 'terror' and 'dread' which would seem more right to me when I read the whole Bible.

Jesus said 'If you love me keep my commandments'. That was in the Gospel of John. John, later in his epistle stated that 'love, is the keeping of God's commandments'. I truly believe this is the important key to what the definition of love is according to God's Word and living the Christian life.

God is the Word (John 1:1). So if we keep the commandments and especially what Jesus stated was the most important one we would love God (the Word) with all our heart, mind soul and strength. Which means we would cleave to the Word of the Lord and judge all things by it. Especially our selves. Fear is to be found outside of the Word which is God. Being found outside of God is a fearful thing and must be repented of.

So this fear of God works for good in driving us into the Word of God that we may 'love our neighbors as ourselves'. In other words be ready to give them of the fountain of living waters. And this working of God through us to our neighbors can only take place when our consciences are clear before God. Thats why the Lord said that the second commandment was like the first. Because the two go hand in hand.
