Why don't we remember the Chinese, Armenians, Gypsies, Native Americans, Moores, Arabs or any of the other millions of groups that have been murdered on a planned scale.

Indeed we should though perhaps the Holocaust has special importance due to the fact that it was carried out more recently than many other large scale acts of genocide and by a "civilized", Western country.

The Spanish killed some 20 million Native Americans in a 100 years. ALthough my numbers might be off.

Well from what I've read the numbers are very hard to estimate and may indeed even be higher than that. That said, however, I think saying the Spanish killed some 20 million Native Americans under a thread about the Holocaust is a bit misleading. This was no planned campaign of extermination. Most was done simply by the unintended impacts of disease.

The Spanish completely ensalved an entire continent. I would say that is planned.

As well, my comment about the Chinese is revlevant because it happened at the same time. The Japanese still refuse to recognize Nanking and other incidents that mimic the Nazi's extermination of the "impurities" in their country. I put "impurities" in qoutes because that is there terminology not mine, and I wanted to include the MANY others that were killed alongside the Jews.

True, but that was not your original comment. Your original comment was that the Spanish killed some 200 million Mesoamericans. I wasn't saying the Spanish were not guilty of some dastardly deeds because they certainly were, just that they were not involved in a premeditated program of genocide of the native peoples.

Yeah, the Japanese rape and murder during WWII was certainly as bad as anything Nazi Germany did. It just escaped my mind the first time I quickly read over your list previously. It too, as I said last time, should certainly be remembered. The reason, again as I said, it will probably not be remembered as much as the Holocaust though is because Imperial Japan for all it's modern technology at the time was not European and not Western and not "civilized." Thus many people will be much more willing to discount the idea that it could ever happen again because the Japanese aren't "one of us".

We also must not forget the terrible Crimes of Communism that are far worse than the Nazis killing the Jews.

Communism is the most evil form of government in the world and it must be stamped out at all costs.
Whats disgusting is that we constantly hear about the Nazi Crimes on the Jews but we never here about the unimaginable suffering of the 50 Million dead under Stalin. The 50 million dead under Mao. People in Zimbabwe who are dying at mugabes ethnic cleansing of white people- the governments of America and the UK who do nothing about it.

Just because we won WW2 doesnt mean it was our finest hour since we aided the spread of Communism and are guilty of giving 200 million people worldwide to Communism.

Another thought to consider is that the Japanese pretend it didn't happen.

Whereas the Germans are disgusted and ashamed it did.

True, true and without trying to sound too pretentious, the German people should certainly be commended for that.

By the way, didn't your national flag say Germany before? Take the red-eye flight to Pyongyang?

I believe that the lesson of the Holocaust is not something that we should lightly discard. This was a hideous sequence of events in which there were many victims as well as the Jews - Homosexuals, Gypsies, Jehovah's Witnesses, Communists, people with mental illnesses etc

I think, as time goes by, the real history of the events will recede in the public mind in a similar way to other (earlier) genocide attempts mentioned above. In my opinion, the lesson of the Holocaust will cease to be specifically about how inhumanly the Germans behaved or how badly the Jews were treated. It will, I hope, be a reminder of how easily, and quickly, ordinary men and women can be tempted towards great evil. Our sympathy for the victims should be boundless. And the vigilance that arises out of remembering the Holocaust is the most fitting memorial to them.
