Hello from the Pascha Family.

We are doing good with the language lessons. I can read Cyrillic better now. Sometimes, I watch the Russian news on channel 35 and I can read people's names. The Russian alphabet looks hard, but it really isn't.

Still looking for a good Finnish language station. I am beginning to get the melody and rhythm of this language. Finnish is short and fast and I think I can get the pronunciation down quickly. The problem will be written Finnish and learning all those cases, lol!:help:

I'm brushing up on my Hangul (Korean alphabet). I still watch Korean soaps and have a book on how to read Korean. Like Russian, Korean looks hard to read, but once you learn the rules, it's easy. Like Finnish, Korean has word endings you have to learn in grammar.:pink:

Later this year I will begin Cherokee and Japanese. I love to learn languages. It's lots of fun and a great way to learn about different people and cultures.

Peace and Long Life

Your gonna have fun with Japanese.

3 Alphabets are always fun. Especcially when one is 5000 characters (Kanji). But hiragana and katakana are only around 70 each :)

I feel sad that I gave up on learning that beautiful language. :(

Hey Oblio,
Have you found Rosettastone to be worthwhile?
Epiphany, you are obviously blessed with quite a gift! Kudos to you on your endeavors :)

It seems to work quite well. You can try a free demo at www.rosettastone.com

Basically there are no lists to memorize, you are not even presented with an alphabet. Just pictures and native speakers. You can also practice/learn diction skills via keyboard and speaking skills if you have a mic. Unfortunately the voice recognition does not seem to work with my PC at home, but it seems to work well at work. You can compare and contrast your tone, emphasis, and voiceprint with native speakers and there is an intelligability meter to gauge your success. I do not know how well that feature actually works though. I might try to download the US English module to test it :) Sadly, they do not seem to have Greek yet.

Learning new language is hard( ask me lol!) I speak Serbian fluently, English not that fluently lol, I can read Russian and understand it because it's similar to Serbian and we got the same alphabet, I can understand Old Church Slavic which we use in Church(the whole Liturgy is in that language back in Serbia) and I REALLY WANT TO LEARN GREEK! I used to work in a Greek restaurant and the only two things I know is how are you and good :D I also know lots of Greek Church songs but I don't understand them, I just know what they are because they are mostly from the Liturgy...and I like Spanish a lot and I am working on it, my friend is teaching me Spanish while I am teaching her Serbian lol;) Good luck with languages;) Bye bye

I've been trying to teach myself Czech. I've got the alphabet and basic phrases down, but I can't go further without a formal class.

I don't know if you're in a college town, but try getting in touch with the Slavonic Languages Department of your nearest college/uni. Even if they don't have Czech, maybe they can tell you where you can receive lessons.

I got some Korean lessons from KBS (Korean Broadcasting System). Maybe you can google the Czech equivalent. Search for Czech radio stations, magazines and newspapers. A chuch with Czech-speaking members may be able to help as well. LOL, I've seen language lessons on an embassy's website! Good luck in your search; learning a language is very rewarding.

I have. The local colleges and university offer Czech, but you have to take something like 2 years of Russian in order to take Czech, which is ridiculous because the two languages are extremely dissimilar and it would be a waste of time and resources to take the Russian before Czech, especially considering I already know basic Czech, and Czech uses the latin alphabet, not Cyrillic.

Radio Praha has some basic Czech, which I've already seen. Oh, and we don't have Czechs around here, I've never met anybody with even a drop of Bohemian in them. :D

Nice site, but how do you register?

Anyways...

learning Greek right now...I bought a book/tape set at the greek festival for $18. I also ask my dad for pronounciation, but I have some basic stuff. The hardest part is the alphabet. I can almost read Greek, but I dont know what the words mean

I spent a good part of my childhood learning proper british :p english - can't survive nowadays without it! My native is greek, and I think I also have a reasonably good understanding of the older forms of the language used in church. In fact my use of modern greek includes the odd petrified archaic phrase not very much in use among my generation. I've also picked phrases and words of other european languages from my bits of travelling (can count up to 10 in slovak :)).
