Hi people, I'm sort of new here. I've got a huge problem. I'm a Baptist, and Baptism(as well as Prtestantism in general) isn't popular over here at all, people are mostly Orthodox Christians. When my folks found out I was a Baptist they went furious and grounded me from my Church(I think the only Baptist Church in this city), they think it's some kind of cult, but they don't have a clue about Christian denominations in general. Now I can't go to Church and can't hang out with my Churchmen, more than that, my step-dad said that all religious people are losers and he also told me that my mind is misplaced. They also told me that if I'm into any religion it should be Orthodox Christianity, but I claim to have the right to make my own choices. I just don't know how to live now, I just found a nice Church and I can't go there. Don't get me wrong, my parents are nice people, but....

You are 19, and ...grounded? You are over 18 and can do anything you want. I was a bit of a rebel and would have wanted or maybe in faCt walked out the door. However, if you still rely on them financially, I would do what they want until you are out of college or have a good enough job to get on your feet. Then leave. Any faith that was based in the loving Jesus, I would have no problems with my kids attending. I really don't care about semantics. My parents used to "micro-manage" me until my now in-laws set up a room for me at their house when I was in college. Then my parents appreciated me more learning that they couldn't "control" me. And then we got along better.

You should have respect for your elders, but just curious..Why do they assume they have the power to control you in such a way?? What do they hold over your head? Is it financial? Or can you leave and get your own place? Not that you would want to cut ties at all, but I am curious?

Don't worry, I was in the same boat as you. Just make a plan to make your own way if this is possible. It is always better to negotiate than retaliate until you are in a better position, then it is YOUR move. They will begin to treat you as an adult shortly thereafter. If they don't? That's their problem. Why anyone would be upset with their kids for having faith is beyond me. I will pray for you friend.

I suggest you pray that God's Holy Spirit will open their hearts.

The next time the subject comes up, be prepared. Find books with information on the different Christian denominations. Don't leave them in the dark.

thank you very much Spock,
I am really free to do whatever I like, but when it comes to my religion, it's something different. They just don't understand my faith and they think it's going to get me into major league trouble. I'll have to wait until I'm done with my education, then I'll be able to move out finally. And right now it's troublesome for me, thank you for your help friends!
