• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hey all,
I was just wondering, see, I am trying to get the guts to look for another therapist with my dads help, and should it be a christian counselor type person or just any? I have heard that clergy are NOT the ones to go to because they just don't have the training. I have been stuck on this for awhile, and I am not sure how I would even go about looking for a Christian one, though I think that would be better. See, I went to a non-Christian before, and I dunno, it just didn't work out good. Soo, I am glad I stopped her, but I am not sure here. I know I probably could use a professional, some things you just can't solve on your own.

As a christian, you should (in my opinion) find a Christian counselor. Clergy are trained in counseling, but not as a professional counselor if you know what I mean. Try doing a search for Christian psychologists in NY on Google.

well i see a therapist who is not a christian counselor and she totally works for me. i know where i live there are places with christian therapists. maybe you can look people up in the phone book or on the internet, you can ask someone that works at your church for places as well. good luck.

A good counselor, christian or not, is what you want. A Christian understands the spiritual side of things. Our school offers free counseling which was a Godsend. He recommended to me an expensive Psychiatrist, but he's awesome.
Clergy may know of a good counselor.
Good luck.

If it were me, I'd prefer to see a Christian. That way, I could talk about the role God plays in my life and what I"m going through and they would understand where I'm coming from. It's totally up to you, though...the most important thing is to find someone you're comfortable with. Your church is a good place to start looking for someone, though! :)

yeah, there are plently of good, qualified Christian counselors out there... at least I'm pretty sure of that. I feel like I saw some kind of webpage for a Christian counseling, or for an internet community of Christian counselors a few days ago. I don't really remember what the address was or how to get to it, but I vaguely remember seeing it. You might search on Yahoo!

God REALLY loves you :)

my therapist is not a christian counselor but she is a christian also, which makes therapy an easier place to discuss the role of God. however any therapist should be open to discussions of such because they are important to people. A good therapist shouldn't try to sway your belief away from God and wouldn't judge you because of your beliefs. I think a huge important factor to look for is someone you feel comfortable sharing yourself with while not feeling the pressure of judgment or something.
