When I read this, I thought of GoGo Yubari from Kill Bill... Wow, an 11 year old slashing a schoolmate's throat... That is incredibly sad and kind of like, wow... Reading the article, it seems like something out of a hollywood movie, but unfortunately it isn't......

Police said the 11-year-old had called Satomi to a study room where she attacked her and then returned to the classroom with her clothes bloodstained.

A stunned Japan was searching for answers on Wednesday after an 11-year-old schoolgirl killed a classmate by slashing her throat, the latest in a string of violent crimes by children.

There was no obvious motive for the attack, but Japanese media said the 11-year-old told police that she had been upset at Satomi for posting a message about her on a Web site and that she had intended to kill Satomi over it.

In 1997, a 14-year-old schoolboy horrified the nation by murdering two children and leaving the severed head of one of them outside the gates of a school in Kobe, western Japan.

Last year, a 12-year-old boy in the city of Nagasaki, which is near Sasebo, confessed to abducting and murdering a four-year-old by pushing him off the roof of a garage.

I've read so many of these stories, it's so depressing. Life has no value to these children. I've asked myself is it because we raise our children with no knowledge of God? Is it because Satan's power grows stronger as we near the end?

No excuses but Japanese grade/high school is much more intense than American public school. That could contribute to building stress. Violence is much more prevelent in the media there as well. Anime (cartoons), manga (comic books) often feature school age children battling supernatural enemies or each other - all while still wearing their school uniforms. One series, Battle Royale, features school kids fighting to the death in a twisted version of 'Survivor'. Still wondering why they may feel prone to hurting each other?

This reminds of the movie "Friday".
At the end there was a situation where Ice Cube grabbed a gun. His dad saw him, and said something like this "Whats wrong with kids today? You're so afraid of getting your @$$ kicked, you pick up a gun!?!
When I was a boy, this (holds up his two fists) was all we ever needed. We lose some, and we win some, but we live to fight another day!!!"

I personally don't think it can be blamed on the media myself, as the media (yes, even the violent parts) has been there who knows how long, and previous generations haven't fallen victim to mass crimewaves. :)

I think something else must be going on with this latest generation of kids there.

One thing I'd like to remind people about this crimewave, though, is to keep it in perspective. As horrible as these incidents are, they are so shocking not only due to their brutality, but due to their rarity.

In San Diego, there's usually a gang feud or teenage squabble that turns deadly at the point of a gun or knife at least once or twice a week: and yet, there's no outcry as there should be, no frantic search for answers, because it's too common. Because it just happens every Friday or Saturday.

*shudders* Reminds me of the story I read here on the boards, two in a row, about the gun that was found in the sandpit of an American school, where children of very young age were also plotting to kill a classmate.

I agree with the statement that what's lacking in general is parental attention and a society that teaches the kids right from wrong!

Not to say killing is good or anything... and it's awful what's going on in Japan there. But no worse than kids killing each other in the ghettoes here in America.
It's not a matter of what's worse. It's a matter of it happening in the first place.

Actually, killing is pretty natural. It's society that instills us with the values that prevent such acts.

I was just wondering on what you base this comment? Are there any psych majors who could back this up?

Of course killing is natural. Our ancestors wouldn't have lasted if they didn't kill. Have you no understanding of the brutality of the world previous to the industrial revolution? That doesn't mean that we haven't found it more practical to get along than to kill each other in these times. You don't really need laws about things that are out of the norm do you?

But you ask: what's wrong the kids? A society that has gone from needing children to children being a burden. Parents don't have time to parent; and the parenting that is done, is often pathetic.

In an agrarian society where each child helps the tribe-or family-provide sustenance children are kept close and valued. They interact with adults every day and have responsibilities literally starting at age two-dropping seeds in holes. As they age they have ever more responsibilities until they eventually start their own families-usually within the same tribe.

In industrial societies parents must leave the children somewhere else, in the care of someone else, in order to provide sustenance for them-the family- and they are primarily an expense, not an asset. Adults must earn enough sustenance to cover: food, child care, health costs, shelter, clothing, and education. Children do not add the family sustenance at any time. Once they are able to earn a sustenance, they leave the family. (although some may help out with elderly parents later) So, for the most part, children don't fit very well into an industrialized society and we have NOT figured out a way to make that happen successfully.

It's no surprise that as more Japanese women have found equality in working, there are more children who are in the same boat there as they are here. They don't have a strong parental presence because the parents are working endless hours to create sustenance. Also known as the rat race.

I will ask you, is this scientific fact or anecdotal? I understand the premise of kill or be killed, but I wonder if it must be learned (the killing part) or if it is part of who we are.

I don't know myself, I'm just asking a question.

These kids fully know what they are doing.
The only thing you can do, is use strick punishment, and develope ways for kids to figure a "way out" of these type of situations.
You can only educate them, and hope. But in the end, they have actions to answer for.
