The fourth commandment: Remember the Sabbath

The reason for my interest in this commandment regarding the Sabbath, is because of a recent move that has begun in the Body of Christ. Which first of all is an awesome thing, I am not taking away from that by any means. And it is one to look back at our Jewish Roots. As we know the Church was birthed in Jerusalem and it was all Jews who were the first Christians, and then the Gospel was also preached to the Gentiles.

Something that I picked up however, is a push to observe the Sabbath day, (Friday evenening to Saturday evening)just like our Jewish friends, by some who do follow the festivals and traditions of the Jewish nation carefully.

According to Collosians 2:16,17: "Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: 17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ."

Based upon this scripture I believe that we are not to observe a sabbath day like Saturday, but that Christ has become our 'sabbath' or as Hebrews 4 put it, "10 For he that is entered into His rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. 11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief."

So therefore as Believers in our Lord Jesus Christ we have entered a life that is a sabbath, rather than observing a specific day.

Resting in HIM<><

We are living in the age of grace. It's by grace that we're saved not by works. But having said that it does not mean that we should forget God's word, that's including the ten commandments. The question is that do we observe for the intend of the commandments? or we do it for the legalistic reasons? I think it's the "REST" of the mind, heart & soul - peace of Christ that surpases all understanding that matters.

I agree with you Mark >>> if we keep the "new" commandment: Love the Lord with all our heart, mind and strength; we will fulfill all others. The commandments (and not just the 10) are a shadow of things to come. If we celebrate any of them and do not see their true meaning; we do it in vain. for instance:

The Passover >>> the sacrifice of Christ >>> Also, to be fulfilled when the Destroyer comes thru the earth and passes over those covered in the blood.

This is but one of the 7 feasts that the Lord commanded the Jews to celebrate. Another is the Feast of Pentecost; Feast of Tabernacles, etc...All with powerful spiritual meaning.

I don't think the Lord wanted ritual. He wanted us to see the light in these "shadows".

The Sabbath rest >>> What the believers will definately have to enter in to on the Day of the Lord. For it is darkness and not light.
Although, I believe He is hidden in those clouds, and those that have eyes to see will see Him. To cease from our labours: stop doing it our way; and stop seeing things as we thought we knew them. Open up to Him, as an empty vessel and be filled with His Spirit. Something we all definately should do in these lasts days.

Since God didn't say exactly which day we ought to worship Him, it really doesn't matter whether it is Saturday or Sunday. It isn't by works but with our hearts that we should worship him, no matter which day it is.

For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.
(1 Sam. 16:7b)

This is what matters to God. We were saved by grace, not by works.

Wow, that is a harsh statement! Are these people 7th Day Adventists?

I'm not sure if the SDAs go that far, perhaps they do, but I do know that there is a movement to "get back to our Jewish roots". They believe in keeping the Mosaic law and if anyone goes to church on Sunday it is the abomination of desolation, which anyone who reads Daniel can tell that it couldn't possibly be that. They also believe that Jesus must be called Yeshewa, because the name Jesus is pagan or something. This group is the epitomy of legalistic.

As far as I can tell from reading scripture is that the Sabbath was given as a day of rest, not a day to go to temple, although at times I know that the Jews did go there on the sabbath. My view is that we can and should worship God at any time, because we can now approach the throne of grace boldly, because Jesus made it possible, He tore the veil; also we that by abiding in Christ are keeping the sabbath perpetually because we have entered into His rest.

There are some things attributed to SDA's that are not so. The denomination itself is opposed to any "sacred name" teachings, although there may be some within the ranks of the SDA Church, as in many other denominations, that hold to sacred name theology.

SDA's and other "sabbath-keeping" Christians observe the sabbath based upon the ACCEPTANCE of the man-made dateline in the Pacific Ocean which affects how you reckon when and where days begin on planet earth. I challenge any "day-keeper" to prove from the Bible where God considers the start of the sabbath on the planet.

Nontheless, I must protest loudly against the argument that it is legalism to believe in obeying the 4th commandment, but that it is NOT legalism to honor your mother or father, the 5th commandment. They are both legalism, or they both are not legalism.

Additionally, a distiction must be made in regarding the 10 Commandments as a METHOD (of salvation) or a STANDARD (of behavior).

"They are both legalism, or they both are not legalism. "

Both are commandments, and the way to live. Read Gal chapter 3:18-25.

the law is no used as a guide. The difference between 4 and 5. Paul addresses 4 in romans saying that it is okay to not observe it, and doesn't address the 5th, so the 5th would be in place because we have no further elabortation on it. :)
