"The case does involve two adults who, with full and mutual consent from each other, engaged in sexual practices common to a homosexual lifestyle….[the defendants] are entitled to respect for their private lives. The State cannot demean their existence or control their destiny by making their private sexual conduct a crime."
From the majority opinion written by Justice Kennedy.

What the ruling does do is it clears the biggest legal obstacle to gay marriage. The justices have said the state cannot “demean their (gays and lesbians) existence or control their destiny by making their private sexual conduct a crime."

The fact that two states now recognize same sex marriages as legal pretty much assures that same gendered unions will receive recognition from the Supreme Court. A similar process occurred with interracial marriage, something that conservative Christians loudly denounced as immoral as well. Several states legally recognized interracial marriage and a number of other states either passed laws defining marriage as something only legal for members of the same race or reaffirmed laws prohibiting interracial marriage. The courts struck down the restrictions on interracial marriage ruling that the constitution states that a legal contract (marriage) recognized by one state is a legal contract in all states.

A religious text is the only justification people have fore discriminating against this group of people. Many of us do not believe in that text. You cannot and should not govern or restrict others based solely on your religious beliefs. Otherwise, be prepared for other religions to impose their restriction upon you.

More importantly, it was a law that was rarely enforced. But the existance of the law was used to discriminate.

It was a bad law, and Bowers was an awful decision. It's gone, and the majority opinion was written extremely broadly. (Which is why Scalia was so upset).

The practical upshot of this is simple: When it comes to your sex life, the government can only regulate if they have compelling need. More or less, as Scalia says, it removes moral distate from the list of reasons the government can interfere with your sex life.

In other words, you can't regulate people's sex lives because you don't like it. You have to have a better reason.

Laws are always right? The laws of this land have no right or wrong attached to them unless you believe in God.

Laws are opinions on how to regulate the people of the land. Murder is a law that is an opinion unless you believe in God who created all things told you its wrong.

Same things. Murder...homosexual love..... Its the opinions of the people who make laws that make laws laws. Not whether they are morally right or wrong. Morality is not subjective if you believe in God. Laws can be.

I just don't want to hear that no one has the right to place their morals on people, because most every law is based on morality.

No, this law doesn't affect me personally. Only criminals going against this law were affected. And they have to realize that it was the law. And laws can change because people's opinions on what is morally right change.

Now it is becoming more and more where a person who believes homosexuality is wrong is going to be put in jail by the thought police. You watch!

I would suppose you can say the same with one using what ever or taking anything. What right does the government have in my own privacy. Now if I am part of an Assembly of Believers that just might be a different case since maybe at some point I would be teaching or preaching in that Assembly and therefore should hold to higher standards then what any MAN'S Law can ever.
So we see Mankind loosing the so-called noos around those who appose this kind of law so they can live like Sodomy and Gamorah. And yes if you make a comment of those two cities then you must know what they stood for.

I need not quote any scripture since those who don't oppose to someone being sodomized will just refute it anyhow. As the Bible says we are to Correct those within the Body of the Assembly of Believers. So this is for you all that do believe: This is a sad day in history. Some laws were made so that people would have something to go on to teach them that this type of action is Immoral and therefore against the Laws of YHWH who happens to be higher then any Man's Court system on the planet. But to those who don't believe: Do what ever you want, just go some place else to brag about it.

It's amazing that it's such a big deal that a group of people are starting to be treated equally under the law in what is a secular nation. This country is making progress toward its goal of individual freedom for all citizens that ends only when that freedom infringes on the rights of others.

People what is this country coming to?

What this country is coming to is the realization that discrimination levied against any minority is still discrimination. That bigotry and hate are still bigotry and hate no matter who the targets are. The country is realizing that minorities are protected under the laws of this county and that all citizen deserve the same rights and responsibilities.

I'm amused... and disgusted.

It's amusing that so much is made over an obvious and correct Supreme Court decision.
What the Court said is that laws governing conduct between consenting adults are unconstitutional. Now we have all the non-readers claiming this means the end for Christianity in the US. How homosexuals are taking over everything and it's all going to heck in a handbasket.

I'm disgusted at the number of people who will not look at what the Court said. I'm disgusted at the people who think civil laws will cure an immorality problem. I'm disgusted at the Christians who will waste time and effort to pass an unenforceable "feel good" law and refuse to befriend a homosexual and tell them about the love of Jesus.

ok...now can someone explain to me why prostitution is still illegal? it's still sex between two consenting (presumably) adults; it's just that money changes hand.

Or incest...it's still sex between two consenting adults...
Or polygamy...marriage between a few consenting adults...

Aren't this supposedly 'victimless' crimes, which are illegal only because the majority of people find it abhorrent?

Unfortuately, it's not true that laws are not affected by moral standards ...

Why should homosexuality be any different? The fact is, lots of people still find homosexuality abhorrent.
