What does Beth mean?

It probably became Elizabeth in English just by the nature of language. Just like we say Jesus, but in Aramaic is Yeshua which is the equivalent of Joshua. So, we have two words for the same name in English...what's worse is Spanish...they have several words for James: I'll just write them as they sound (it is late and I don't remember ever seeing many of them spelling in Spanish): Hecobay, Himee, Diego...I think there's another one, but I can't remember.

Just a note of exposition on the hebrew word beth. Beth does mean house but just as it is in the english can mean a house as in a building or a house as in a dynasty (for lack of a better word coming to mind). As in the house of David, not speaking of his physical house or building but of his legacy.
So when translating scriptures with the word Beth in them, it is good to entertain the possibility of this application of the word as well.

Beit also means House. I believe that this is taken from the second Hebrew letter "bet".

This is not pronounced as we would something that you put money on but rather as "bait".

So Bet stands for the second letter or house and alternate english spellings are:

beit, beth, beyt, bayt, bayit

Now as for "daughter" as in my title it is "Bat" Most familiarly used as in "Bat Mitzvah" which literally means, "Daughter of the Commandment", as "Bar" means "son" ( Bar Mitzvah) .

And in case you didn't know what my title means:

Bat El Elyon = Daughter of the MOST HIGH GOD! ;)

No problem...I don't know everything, but I know something about alot of things. ; )

Well put! At our baptisim we are all given gifts of the Spirit and I believe teaching was one of them. That doesn't mean that we know it all but that what we are given to know we can know well.

So I would like your help in answering a question about His Name, if you would? I would like to share what I have found in Scripture regarding this and hope that you (or anyone else) will give me your understanding, please? I want to know truth as it is pleasing in His eyes so it is very important to me that my understanding is truth.

It is common knowledge that the Scribes and Pharisees changed His sacred name YHWH to Adoni which means Lord. Then in translations it was kept to the meaning of Lord over 4000 times, right so far?

My whole journey into His Name began when I was lead to Ps. 68:4: "Sing to Elohim, sing praises to His Name. Raise up a highway for Him who rides through the deserts by His Name YAH. And exult before Him."

Although my father was Messianic, I rejected religion of any sort until my whole life because one black hole and I saw His light peeping through. I believe He is leading me through this and we are told, "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good." 1Thes. 5:21. This is the reason for these questions.

Then I thought of Moses when he asked, "Who shall I say sent me?" And when I was looking up "I Am" in Strong's I found #1961, "Hayah". It hit me smack in the face...ha = the, and YAH = the Ever Existing One, right? The translators must not have caught it because there is no referrance to this line of thought. But it made so much more sense to me that I cried when I saw it. When Moses asked who? Our Awesome Creator told him...exactly Who! Ex. 3:14 "The Yah, that is the YAH...tell them,'the YAH' (or the Ever Existing One) has sent you'. This was awesome to me.

Then I came acrossed Pro. 30:4, "Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou canst tell?" Proverbs 30:4 (KJV) And I thought, 'Why would He ask us this question?' Later I came across another text that shed light, "Which think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams (if they are false prophets their dreams would be their own opinions) which they tell every man to his neighbour, as their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal." Jeremiah 23:27 (KJV) Wow!

But who is Ba'al?...I thought. The World Book Encyclopedia says, "Ba'al means the Lord." What???? I thought how could this be and (as if He were talking directly to me through His Word) I found, "For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. [8] And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom YHWH shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: [9] Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, [10] And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. [11] And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:" 2 Thes. 2:7-11 (KJV) With this I cried.

Then I began wondering about,"... and what is his son's name, if thou canst tell? Proverbs 30:4 (KJV) Our Blessed Redeemer was born a Jew in a Jewish family in a Jewish community...why do we call Him by a Greek name? I thought. Is it possible that this is also a "strong delusion"? I was then taken to, Isaiah 4:1 (KJV), "And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach." Biblically speaking this says to me, In that day (the last days) seven (all as in complete) women (churches) will take hold of one man (claim to be "Christ followers") saying, we will eat our own bread (believe our own doctrines) and wear their own clothes (self-righteousness) but still want to be called by thy name (Christians) to hide their falsehood and perversions. If I have interpreted this text correctly it is speaking of the last day and how everyone will be saying they are Christian but they won't know what true Christianity is. Is this not the state of things today? "Having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof" ?

Then I was directed to Acts 4:12 (KJV), "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." And to Zech. 14:9 (KJV), "And YHWH shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Master, and His Name one." The Son came in His Father's name, John 5:43, and His own didn't know Him. History repeats itself. In that day, "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. [22] Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? [23] And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." Matthew 7:21-23 (KJV)

Are you beginning to get the same picture that I have or am I missing something? I think of Rev. 21:23, "And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of Elohim did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. Yahushua our Righteous Savior, to Whom all power and authority was given, praise His Name!

Beth means "House" - Bethlehem is "House of Bread", Bethel is "House of God"...those are the ones I know...there is also Bethesda and what not. Don't confuse Beth with Bath...While Beth means house, Bath means daughter.
I am sorry but you are not correct. the word for daughter is Bat, and the word for son is bar

Just curious...

Like as in... my church fellowship is names "Beth Messiah" and I hear "Beth" in from of many things... even Bethlehem.

What does it mean?

Thanks :)

Also, the proper pronunciation is not "Beth" as in the women's name,
but "bait" (like what you use to go fishing with :) ).
