Afternoon greetings!

Your ideas and focus sound wonderful. I wont be able to weigh in - I dont have a scale here at home!! I usually go to a nearby gym and use that scale on occasion. I can tell when the weight is coming or going, thanks to that comfort level.

But I will still be happy to post what I do, my thoughts and help for you, and where I go wrong.

As to folks making fun, Ill try to stay on top of that with the report button.

Not to worry, if you see something like that, use it as motivation of what not to be.

Today, I did get to the zoo and walked. Right now its late afternoon and Im tired - I could go to sleep. Why does that happen?

Im gonna make sloppy joe's tonight w/ground turkey and low sodium sauce. Im making the boys fries and I might have just a few, but not a full serving. I hope to make another veggie to go w/it. Im gonna have water to drink.

Whats a good alternative to fries?

I like the idea of having salads. They are so refreshing on a hot summer day.

If you have trouble eating veggies, Id suggest a veggie chilli. Its a wonderful option to get in those veggies and you can opt out of the meat.

Well, best wishes for the evening. Ill post again in the morning.

I struggle with my wieght because of my appetite, I pray for victory and little by little He is changing my eating desires. I love all of those things we shouldn't have like anything sweet and of course, fries. But in the last couple of years I became vegetarian and am now vegan (no animal products including dairy or eggs). I have never felt better. For fries I scrub my potatoes and slice them with the skins. Then I put a small amount of virgin olive oil on a rimmed cookie sheet and roll the fries in it to coat. I then salt them and bake for 20 min. at 400 degrees. After 20 min. I turn them over for another 10 or so min. I like mine crisy so I cut them thin. Olive oil is very good for us in moderation. Salt is needed in small quantities. I salt mine because I eat mostly raw or steamed food with no salt in the processing. Nearly every canned or other packaged food is loaded with salt and sugar (another killer). So I buy foods that have nothing but water and maybe salt. One of the most beneficial things I have learned is that when my body says I am hungry it is really needing water. So I drink water whenever I get a craving between meals. It helps with the munchies and the complextion. I hope you enjoy your dieting otherwise it won't last. But it can be fun experimenting with new and healthy food. I became vegetarian after a serious illness that nearly took my life. When I turned to our Blessed Savior for help He lead me to a more natural diet. My sisterly love through our Great Physican

i dont have a scale either... are there cheap ones out there that do the trick for monitering and what not but wont cost a fortune? and i am gonna have to be a week behind y'all because i leave sunday to go on a cruise and wont come back till that next sunday. so i wont be here for the weigh in but i also know that going on a trip isnt a realistic time to start a new eating habit and what not.... but i will start looking at what i do eat and where i need to work on it for sure!

Instead of fries, you could try corn on the cob--that's pretty kid friendly and it's good for you. Baking/roasting potatoes like the earlier poster mentioned would be better than frying them, too. 3a144,000 had some good advice about drinking water instead of snacking.

I got up and ran again this morning, which means I am finished with week 1 of the program! It actually felt good to get moving, and it seemed like the time flew by even though I did the same amount of running/walking as the previous two days. Next week I start running for two minute intervals.

And now I have gone 24 hours without drinking a coke! woohoo!

I also found a website that you all might be interested in: fitday.com You have to create a free profile, but then you can put in your foods and activities and see how your calorie consumption compares to your calorie use. You can also set a weight goal, and it will tell you how much you need to lose a week (a realistic goal will be around a pound a week). There are a lot of features that I haven't figured out yet or used, but it could be a great tool.

Blanton, I hope you have fun on your cruise!

I need to remember those goals of mine. .. or maybe I'm too ambitious? I may have to pare some of those down--and just try to stick with one or two. For right now, I am going to try to keep on my running program and keep drinking water. Once I've got those under my belt, I'll move on! Little steps are hard for me to do.

Morning Greetings one and all!

3a

I look forward to trying your idea on fries in the oven with olive oil. I like using olive oil and it sounds tasty!

Ahhh a cruise!

Well, sea cruises dont go over very well in this Navy household - can ya guess why? Even as we speak the hubby is out to sea - but Im sure its not as nice as Carnival! Kathy Lee should have done commercials for the Navy.

Im not sure what type of exercise Ill get in today. My boys are very difficult when it comes to what da mama wants/needs to do.

Wild,

We have not had corn in awhile. About three years ago, my hubby had a terrible sofball accident that took out 13 teeth. He had it all wired back in, but eating things like apples or corn still on the cob is an almost a no no. The boys might like a return to the veggie when the hubby is out to sea. I might get some soon.

Ive almost given up the diet coke as well! I use to have coffee in the am, and any other time grab a soda. Not any more. Im much happier about it now.

Say for water weight gain, how do you guys fight that?

Well, I gardened this morning and have a date w/my boys at the theater this afternoon. Maybe this evening Ill get a walk in there.

I think we need to add the Lord into this mix, guys. Ive yet to mention or even think that much about His help in all this. Thanks for the reminder, 3a.

How do you guys add the Lord to these type of efforts?

Sending Kind Regards,

Sherry

Owwww! Ouchie! Hearing about your husband makes my teeth hurt! I am sure that was a difficult time in your lives.

I've always heard that a way to fight water retention is to drink more water, as well as reduce salt intake. It sounds counter-intuitive, but your body retains water to be sure that it has what it needs and if you are keeping yourself hydrated then it doesn't have to save up. Or something!

When I run early in the morning, it helps me to see the world fresh for the day--the wildflowers/weeds aren't wilted from the heat and there are more birds around. Being able to be part of that, and taking care of myself in other ways (enjoying fresh food, making healthy decisions, etc.) makes me thankful and reminds me to be a good steward of the things I have like: a nice neighborhood, good health, the environment around me, the responsibility I share with my husband to make good choices for our nourishment, etc.

I find that exercising in the morning, before I do anything else, helps me a great deal. I don't know that I would stick with it (even for three days) if I put it off until later in the day. Of course, your boys may be too young to leave alone for 30 minutes--my mom used to ask if we wanted to go for a walk when I was little, and we usually did. Maybe you can take them on walks around your neighborhood after dinner, as a new family routine.

well salt is an important part of our diet as well, which sounds weird... but most people eat way too much. drinking water and putting a little salt in your diet are two very important things. just make sure you drink more water when you do add salt.

I think it's great you guys are starting this up and I thought I might add some advice and tips for those who are wanting to start a cardio program. I didn't even come up with this myself but was informed by a Boston Marathon winner :D See for yourself!
http://runnersworld.com/home/0,1300,1-51-55-236,00.html

basically it's called the "Run/Walk" program. Where you start off instead of running for 30 minutes to an hour running 2 minutes and then walking for 1 for 30 minutes to an hour.

It really helps to start up a cardio program because it is much easier to stick with week after week.

And don't overtrain either. 40-60 minutes 3-4 days a week is plenty. I've heard of people doing 100 minutes of cardio 6 days a week and that can really mess you up. So keep it all in moderation :D

My thoughts and advice! Good luck!!! Have a great day!!

I blew my right knee out two years ago and had to have total ACL replacement along with some other ligaments. Unfortunately, I couldn't do anything but lay around and eat. Prior to start rehab for my knee, I weighed 200 lbs. My jeans were too tight and I got a beer belly for the first time in my life.

When my knee was healed, I started running, which gave way to Mtn. Biking because running hurt my knee too much. But I got hooked on Mtn. Biking and am still doing it today. That's a great cardio workout. In addition to riding my bike, I started lifting weights. So, I got the excercise part down and have stuck with it.

Then, I started eating healthy. No more fast food, cokes, etc. I eat a lot of fresh, steamed vegetables. I watch what I eat. Although I'm not a vegetarian, I love to eat Boca Burgers. They have the taste of meat and they're healthy. I also eat sugar free bread. And I try to avoid sugar.

I lost 25 lbs and I am down to 175 lbs., which is where I want to stay. Now, I just want to cut up and have started taking a weight loss supplement to get leaner.

I just thought I'd share this with everyone. I think the secret to weight loss isn't the hundreds of dollars to invest in programs, etc. It's eating and drinking right and excercise. God Bless.

Is it too late to join?????

I woud love too. Here is my story...

I am 28, 5'10 and 145 pounds...that is ok. However, I have a 2 year old and a 9 month old and I have stretchy, flabby and sagging skin on my belly and thighs. I really need a tone up and to rid of some cellulite. (If anyone knows how to tone sagging breasts also, I would apreciate that too.... :) )
I love coffee...one of my crutches, and sweets. I also like white breads and pasta...definate 'don'ts)
Any advice would be greatlt appreciated - especially cause I would like to conceive another baby again in the next few months (if I can twist hubby's arm) and would like to be in shape first.

Thanks

sounds to me as though you are in great shape!...flabby bits and babies are usually connected, aren't they. I'm not sure whether your hard work might be wasted if you start working on your stomach muscles and then go and stretch them with pregnancy., I also like many of the foodstuffs that you mention, so you are not alone, there

I'm following this thread closely too. I don't have a weight problem (5'11" 160 lbs) but I do have a serious cholesterol problem for which I'm taking medication (Lipitor). Part of it is genetic, but the other part is pure weakness on my part for fried foods and ice cream! If I could eliminate these two culprits from my diet I think I would be in much better shape.

I don't think we should think of any foods as definite don'ts--just things we should have on occasion and not everyday. Crossing out foods we love from our diet can only make us want that forbidden fruit more. I say that, as I try to wean myself from soft drinks! :) Moderation in all things.

Stephen1964: I love ice cream too--so much that I hate it when we buy it for home, because then I have some everyday. I just try not to buy it and bring it home--that way the only way I can have any is to go out and buy a single serving (and sometimes that's too much trouble). Maybe you could try that--or try substituting sherbert/sorbet/frozen yogurt for ice cream. That's a little better for you!

I'm trying not to think of my goal of being healthy as something where I'm cutting out things--instead I try to think of adding healthy things. Like--I will add more fresh veggies to my meals, or I will drink more water, I will add exercise to my day. That gives me a positive feeling, and the things I add push out the less healthy things in my lifestyle.

BTW, I had plenty of veggies last night and today for lunch. As of now, I have had 4 servings of fruit/veggies for today! And supper's still to come--which, by the look of the pantry, will be veggie soup.

Evening Greetings!

Well, even if you dont have a "weighty" issue, join in! We all love having the common bond of food dilimas and the Lord working within them!

I would very much like to be closer to 145, however I dont think I want to be at that weight. 150 would be really nice, and Id be thrilled to see even 160. Man, its been 10 years since Ive seen that weight. Three years since Ive seen 222! Dont want to go there again!

Wild,

Ive been thinking about you and veggies.

You know, if you grew you own veggies you might like em more! Even for those living in apartments, container gardening works. I have a wonderful garden going right now and Im hoping the Lord will bless it fully. I have toiled and terried and babied that garden since February!!! But I find it a wonderful activity and even if nothing yeilds, Ill be happy that I tried.

You are right about not cutting foods. Lately, Ive been buying the less fat to no fat stuff - not only is it questionable at being better for me, it tastes terrible - especially the pop corn! Ahhh styrofoam!

Anyway, Im not that terribly worried about fatty stuff. Just a little can go a long way if you make it do so! What's been bugging me is the exercise.

I got out today and OH DID I WORK OUT! Took my boys, who brought along the neighborhood, to an open field where they played pick up baseball and I walked/ran for my workout for a wonderful 45 min. I just love the metabolism workouts! Walk run, run walk, walk, crawl, stop, run walk run and do it again, backwards! Just to throw your body off as to what you are gonna do next. Your body then kicks it into high gear no matter if your walking, running or crawling - its like you were running the whole time! Its great and keeps the heart pumping and my arms and legs moving.

Im still not comfortable in my cloths - it down right stinks, but Im hoping for better and soon enough the best fit into my clothes yet.

Now, Ive started to remember this in my prayers and I hope to get better at that from now on.

So, Im off now to do something for dinner - I think it'll be a salad w/leftover bbq chicken diced up.

Enjoy the evening folks.

p/s: guys, in which way can I include you in my prayers - what r u specifically needing in your daily deals w/food or weight?

walking and swimming are excellent excercises to do Blanton. Particularly swimming, because it's a great all round excercise and your body is supported by the water. I swim 2 or 3 times a week. It's the only excercise that i feel able to do. I have asthma and everything else is too strenuous, i can take my time with the swimming and choose my own pace.

Sherry:

Actually, I am growing a tomato plant and two bell pepper plants in containers right now. Home grown food does taste better! My parents always had a huge garden when I was growing up, so I love gardening. I wish the dirt was better here so that I could have a real garden. But, tomatoes and peppers are better than nothing. Thanks for thinking about me! I'm glad that you got a chance to get moving and get outside with your kids.

My next running day will be tomorrow! I can't wait!

Blanton: Swimming is a good exercise and easy on joints. Walking is too. As long as you are burning more calories than you are ingesting, you will lose some weight.

Hope everyone has a good weekend!
