Has anyone seen the new movie, "Troy"? If so, did you think it was worth seeing?
Saw it Friday. Best epoch film yet! I always said "Spartacus", for the time it was made, and "Braveheart" for raising the bar on wide-screen battles, but Troy takes the cake!KenH said:Has anyone seen the new movie, "Troy"? If so, did you think it was worth seeing?
And?? It is a war movie.womendon'tbesilent said:After seeing the movie I looked through the Iliad to see if it's as violent, and it's even more violent. Homer seems to love describing how metal can destroy the human body, or otherwise he really wishes to tell people how awful war is. The whole thing is just reeking of lust and blood.
Uh, I didn't see any blame toward Helen in the movie, it is made plain it's Paris' fault. As for the poem, "Illiad", well, duh, it's a 3,000 year old story! What is really disgusting about this story is how the blame always comes down on Helen.
In other words, a typical story of the history of the world.Whether real or fictional, she's just a victim of male pride. The war is about men's property, their injured honor, and about greed.
She's just a pretext.
Yes, and I think it's that irony (read: typical Greek tale=irony) which Homer wanted to point out. It's all an echo of Adam's "SHE made me do it"... And then the women of Troy get mad at her because she somehow killed their husbands. Nevermind that it was Greek warriors who did it - blame the woman, of course.
Did you read of Agememnon's arrogance? It had nothing to do with the city's "enlightment", rather, Priam's arrogance that his walls "have never been breached."Also, why do the Greeks want to destroy Troy? I understand that they want to control it because it is the epitome of the enlightened city full of art and riches, but why destroy it?
Uh, yea, again, like the entire history of mankind. They are like barbaric ignorant people who hate anything that they cannot make or control, and so they have to break it.
Is this your first venture into studying history???The whole thing is so stupid. In the end, everyone dies, or is raped, or is enslaved and what it took many generations of people hard work to build, is completely destroyed. The whole thing is so maddening it makes you want to go back in time and beat some sense into these men.
A bit sensitive, aren't we??? You claim I called you stupid (untrue), yet it's ok for you to blatently call me moron??womendon'tbesilent said:do you notice the IRONY of belittling my historical knowledge while making the statment: "Illiad", well, duh, it's a 3,000 year old story!"
And it's spelled ILIAD with one L .
you, typical woman-hating patronizing Christian. How dare you tear my opinion apart as if it's worthless!!!
Your favorite verse is "goodness leads you to repentance"???? You wouldn't know goodness if it hit your between the eyes. If you don't like my post about the movie, you can always disagree. But you need to make personal accusations and insults. Well I can play the same game.
Glad to see you've recovered nicely from your hurt pride to sufficiently do back to me what you say was wrond.womendon'tbesilent said:I did not claim you called me stupid, I said you implied it. There is a dictionary at m-w.com You will need that a great deal while you skip through the Iliad.
So, you serve a philosophy which does embrace two wrongs? As for wrong making a right, at least I don't claim I serve a philosophy which I obviously don't follow.
Do you have something against Jesus? Did I ever include Him in any previous post here? What does Jesus have to do with anything here in "Troy"???Lastly, your second commend is lame. When you have fantasies that you are the 'great' Achilles chopping off your enemies in a righteous war for Jesus, and you're stealing fetching slave girls, do keep in mind it is a fantasy.
I thought this thread was about the movie "Troy". Let's keep in mind it was a fiction movie. I have never implied the social aspects of the movie, set 3 millenia ago, had any merit, merely the movie was good, as a movie, not a philosophical statement.c a s t i n c r o w n s said:PatrickM- Did you ever consider for 30 seconds that Jesus was for equality for men and women? He invited women to hear him speak when at that time that was forbidden and he said that all people can be saved (not just men) which at the time was a radical statement. All I'm trying to say is to stop being so blatently rude to women
After reading a few of your posts, I'm just curious: What did men do to you that makes you hate us so much?womendon'tbesilent said:No he didn't "just end his post with a quip'.. he totally tore my post apart and implied I am stupid and know nothing. As for what Jesus would type, I really don't care. Whatever God this man serves, I want nothing to do with him.

Can't answer his question, can you. Is this another example of your "two wrongs make a right" philosophy?womendon'tbesilent said:After seeing your Catholic icon, I'm just curious: What did women do to Catholic men that made them treat us like sub-human beings for the past 2000 years?
