Democracy at its core is the right of the people to choose how they are governed.  What if they decide that they want to set up a theocracy? 

That is the chance that we will have to take.

Ok, so yeah, let's liberate them and then leave... which would leave them in a complete state of disorder, which I'm SURE some communist leader would take advantage of - move in and set up a communist dictatorship. Ta da! Another China, or North Korea.

Wait... didn't we just REMOVE a more or less communist dictator? hm.

What's with the communists? Maybe you're thinking of religious extremists.

And no, Saddam was more or less a fascist.

No, I was just using them as an example. When a country is in anarchy/confusion/etc., that's the perfect time for someone to rally a little power and take utter control over the country, it's been done, too. Communists are just the ones that first come to mind in that.

With 60% of its population Shi'ite Muslims, and many of those dragging themselves through the streets to Karbala, not to mention the flagellation and other forms of religiously inspired self-abuse, I suppose it won't be long before conservative Christians in this country demand separation of church and state for Iraq (all the while denying such a thing exists at home, of course).

Oh wait, they already have:

Didn't you read the thread title or the linked article?

Sure we want them to have democracy. We need to educate them in the importance of having a democracy. We will do all that is possible to help this take place. But the future of the Iraqi people will be determined by the Iraqi people.
