  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Jesus was not talking about a literal crown when He referred to the crown of life. The crown of life symbolically represents eternal life. You don't think that a condition of salvation is being faithful until death? You don't think someone has to be willing to suffer and even die for Christ in order to be saved in the sense of how scripture talks about being saved if we endure to the end?

Matthew 10:21 “Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. 22 And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.

Luke 21:17 And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. 18 But not a hair of your head shall be lost. 19 By your patience possess your souls.

How is what Jesus said above any different than saying that those who are faithful until death will receive the crown of life?

The context of Revelation 2:10 is in relation to not being hurt by the second death. So, that means it's talking about being given eternal life rather than suffering eternal death.

Revelation 2:10 Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.11 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.”
Matthew 10 is about the sending out of the disciples and what they would encounter.
Matthew 10:21-22 is in direct context to verse 23
22You will be hated by everyone because of My name, but the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.
23When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next. Truly I tell you, you will not reach all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
Then in the last verse, it says:
42And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is My disciple, truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.”
So, all one has to do is give a cup of cold water to His disciple and he's secured his reward.

The seven churches in Revelation were in the tribulation
Revelation 1:
4John,To the seven churches in the province of Asia....9I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and kingdom and perseverance that are in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and my testimony about Jesus.
Matthew 24:13
But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.
Revelation 3:10
Because you have kept My command to persevere, I will also keep you from the hour of testing that is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.

You're not actually addressing anything I said and it seems you're trying to deflect from what I said. Please address what I said if you want to continue the discussion. While Jesus may have been talking to people in churches existing in the first century, He was teaching principles that apply to all believers. It's not as if He was only saying those who are in the first church of Smyrna would receive the crown of life if they were faithful until death. That applies to all believers, as the following verse indicates..

James 1:12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

Do you think the crown of life is a literal crown that will be given to each person who is faithful until death and endures temptation that they will literally wear on their heads? It's not. It's a symbolic representation of eternal life, which is what "the Lord has promised to those who love Him".

Jude 1:20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

Since there were already those approved, so, no I don't believe they received a literal crown. The word behind approved was a word to test the genuineness of coins. A true coin would pass the test and a fake would not.

1 Corinthians 11:18First of all, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it. 19And indeed, there must be differences among you to show which of you are approved.

Romans 16:10
Greet Apelles, who is approved in Christ. Greet those who belong to the household of Aristobulus.

Are saying one has to "earn" their salvation? I believe that if one is a true believer based on the following scriptures, then that person will pass the test.
John 6:
35Jesus answered, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never hunger, and whoever believes in Me will never thirst. 36But as I stated, you have seen Me and still you do not believe. 37Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never drive away. 38For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but to do the will of Him who sent Me.
39And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of those He has given Me, but raise them up at the last day. 40For it is My Father’s will that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”

No, I'm not saying that at all. You don't earn salvation by accepting the gift God offers (Titus 2:11, Matthew 22:1-13). We're just not on the same page here, so I'm moving on.

Fair enough. Not exactly the OP anyways.
