  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"Questioned about a growing trepidation among western Christians about the growth of Islam outside of the Middle East, especially in predominantly Christian nations in the West, the pope said this was something touched on in his discussions with interfaith leaders in Turkey and Lebanon.

However, he cautioned that oftentimes these fears are “generated by people who are against immigration and trying to keep out people who may be from another country, another religion, another race.”

I think the Pope misses the target, when he says it's a "maneuver against migrants", when in reality, it is a maneuver against cultural change.

Shouldn't there be a difference between the idea of migrants and cultural change? Because to me, they're two different things. Also, ideas useful in this discussion are the differences between revolutionary/ watershed cultural changes, and gradually integrated cultural changes..

Christianity and Islam do not mix and never will. The growing trepidation among western Christians about the growth of Islam outside of the Middle East is justified. You are right that the difference between the idea of migrants and cultural change being two different things.

I think that is very perceptive of you. I think it applies to much of what is erroneously called "racism" as well.

I think people may not want to change and want to shun Muslim immigrants is because they bring terrorism wherever the go. Some in the west are having a hard time seeing this. Personally I don’t want sharia law here or persecution of Christian’s. Just because they might become a majority doesn’t make then right or helpful to our country. The first things they are trying to do are take control of freedom of religion the governments, and they want to introduce sharia law. I don’t think we should have to change in these ways. Muslims need to conform to our culture. This is our country.

Islam isn't a "race" though. While there is an argument to be had about there being a "culture" that ties to it, just like Christianity, you can't be called "racist" for being anti-islamic. That by definition makes no sense. There are lots of white people that follow the Islamic faith. Heres research that breaks Islam down by race just in the US. Link Which shows 60% of Muslims in the US, are white.

Hmmm...
"Often the resistance against bank robbery is oftentimes because the robbers are from a different country, a different race, a different religion."
:help:
Or it could just be against bank robbery.

However, he cautioned that oftentimes these fears are “generated by people who are against immigration and trying to keep out people who may be from another country, another religion, another race.”

This statement he made... He's lumping things together that shouldn't be categorized the same.

One of these things is not like the others.

Two are circumstances of birth, one is an ideological choice.

Countries should absolutely have a right to be discriminating when it comes voluntarily ideologies with regards to who they let in.

People can't control which country they were born in, or which race they are...but people can certainly choose which ideologies they subscribe to.

Trying to lump Islam in with "Of Arab descent" has always been a dishonest ploy.

It'd be like equating "This guy is sympathetic to the IRA, he's not a good fit here" to "Racism against Irish people"
