  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Keeping yourself in check. Bible study of Sirach 5:1-6

Really like the book of Sirach, made a video with my own commentary talking about some specific verses.

Youtube video here
How do you refer to Sirach, in the context of Bible Study? No, I'm not going to both to look at the link.

The book of Sirach is apocryphal, and not in the bible, yet the text describing the video says: "In this video, we explore Sirach 5:1–6, a powerful biblical warning against pride, overconfidence, and delaying repentance." (my emphasis).

The Wisdom of Sirach is canonical to the Orthodox Church and is in my Bible. It may not be in your bible, but that only makes it apocryphal by your definition.

I'm sure there's site rules about this.

Jesus indirectly quoted from Sirach may times and it makes me wonder, if people insist sirach is not inspired, then, why did Jesus need to repeat anything in it again?

you can google and find a few good websites outlining all the similarities in luke's gospel to sirach.

Well, it wasn't in the Hebrew Old Testament, and unlike the actual Old Testament books, it is not quoted in the New Testament. I couldn't see any mention of the Apocrypha in the Forum Rules.

It is in the Septuagint, and the Catholic and Orthodox bibles. Sirach is Biblical.

I could pick out a couple of points from the site rules, but from Christian Scriptures Statement of Purpose:
  • This forum is not for discussion of which version of the Bible is the best or most appropriate.

I read Sirach for the first time only a couple of weeks ago, and this was the first commentary I've had. Won't be able to expand on any points, but I enjoyed the watch. Will need to go back for another read of the book. Thanks for sharing.

I think that's a good point . . . that if we have wealth, we should not be thinking only about our own selves.

And in case we have "enough", this does not mean we should just stop doing any more work; because we might be able to help someone else.

"be content with such things as you have," we have in Hebrews 13:5.

Also . . .

"Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need." (Ephesians 4:28)

So, yes it can be good to do work for more than myself. And, of course, you can have a family to provide for. And . . . I think of this > our Apostle Paul worked with his own hands to support those who were with him >

"'Yes, you yourselves know that these hands have provided for my necessities, and for those who were with me.'" (in Acts 20:34)
