  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

We will probably have another shutdown at the end of January. Hopefully they start preparing to fund SNAP for February now.
The new law, signed last night, extends SNAP until 2027

Our president is on TV reminding everyone of what a bad leader he is.
He and his party succeeded in getting the government open again, which was a defeat to Schumer and his friends. So it sounds like he's a better leader than Schumer.

Speaking truth to power is seldom comfortable -
Yes, and even less possible in the Trump. administration.

they held their constituents hostage - openly saying they were using their suffering for leverage - millions of people effected and in the end got ZERO - nothing.
Nothing from the iron fisted Republicans who only want their way. The used to be the party of “No!” Now they are the party of, “Yes, sir Mr. President. How wonderful you are. Anything for you. Best ever!”

I guess we should have expected Republicans to reverse the law that they passed in July just because the 42 Dems who couldn't beat the bill in July wanted another chance. (and, yes it was wrong not to send out the SNAP checks).

Yes, and even less possible in the Trump. administration.
The Trump Administration are the ones who held votes and who voted to re-open the Government - The Democrats voted against it - causing millions to go without food. That is the plain truth.

They stated so

Democrats’ Admit American’s Suffering Is Their “Leverage”

“There will be families that are going to suffer… but it is one of the few leverage times we have.” Rep. Katherine Clark, the number two House Democrat.
In a stunning admission that peels back the curtain on partisan tactics, Democratic Senator Chris Coons, amongst several other Democrats, have openly declared that the ongoing government shutdown serves as their party’s “only moment of leverage.”
Nothing from the iron fisted Republicans who only want their way. The used to be the party of “No!” Now they are the party of, “Yes, sir Mr. President. How wonderful you are. Anything for you. Best ever!”
Hogwash - the legislation in the Big Beautiful Bill passed the House and Senate - signed into law on July 4, 2025 - The Democrats did not like the fact they could not win legislatively, so hostage taking was their only option - and it failed miserably.

Google is still free but I like being helpful so...

I didn't say he coined the name only that he distanced himself because not one of his promises about the ACA came true

  1. You can keep you plan - wrong
  2. You can keep your doctor - Wrong
  3. Health insurance cost will go down - Wrong
Here is the truth:

  1. Premiums have increased by 80%.
  2. From 2010 to 2023, the average premium for family coverage increased 80%, from just over $13,000 to nearly $24,000.
  3. Total healthcare costs for a family of four now exceed $30,000 per year—increasing from $18,000 per year when Obamacare was passed.
  4. Deductibles have increased over 50% since Obamacare was implemented in 2013.
Remember this beauty?

Boston on October 30, 2013, President Obama promoted the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and emphasized its affordability. He stated that “for many Americans, health insurance will cost less than the cost of your cell phone bill or cable bill.”

President Donald Trump is a far better leader than anyone in the Democratic Party.

Well according to Don, the democratic party is the scum of the earth. I guess that makes Donald just a little bit better than scum then.

Party politics is what's wrong with the whole situation. But you go ahead and just keep drinking that Kool Aid.

No - it is just as accurate an opinion as yours is..

Speaking truth to power is seldom comfortable - they held their constituents hostage - openly saying they were using their suffering for leverage -
In order to secure health care subsidies for people who need it. Unlike the GOP, who intentionally want to get rid of it, and Trump who defied a court order by refusing to fund SNAP benefits, which were readily available through the shutdown.

Not hard to see who is on the side of their constituents here.

millions of people effected and in the end got ZERO - nothing.

That's a fail in my book
I agree. Democrats should have held strong. People were seeing that it is the Republican party that wants to deny SNAP funds they have full access to, and were trying to end health care subsidies for those who need them, polls were showing increasing support for Democrats and that many voters were seeing that it was the GOP to blame for the shutdown.

The tide was turning. If they kept going, who knows? They very well might have succeeded in getting health care subsidies for people who need them...but, in the end, Democrats caved. Same old story.

Instead, they got a Republican promise of a vote in the future. And as we all know, a promise from Republicans means exactly what you said: "ZERO - nothing."

-- A2SG, still, Democrats held on longer than I ever expected them to, so there's that....

Hey, I agree. We should never have gone with the Heritage Foundation plan. Single payer is the way to go, baby!
