That sounds then like something that would involve symbol and ritual related to scripture.
There was a science and research to it initially, but now it's just what it is.

Since no one else needed the breakthrough, or understood what I was talking about when I was making discoveries ... It just ended up being like breathing or some other process that happens without thinking.

I recall the study that lead in the odd direction of scripture like that was the idea of the bible teachings being a living thing. The sacrament idea came when reading the catechism, and it seemed like a goal of the book was to turn people into a living embodiment of the sacraments. I don't recall what happened from there, as what was created was based on what was needed.

Now what happens is just "prayer" ... the specifics were more tailored for me.

Two things you didn't mention were biofeedback and neurofeedback.
Yes, we have come a long way an accessibility. I have not tried any though.
One time her eat the hospital where I work I asked the sleep study folks to monitor my brain as I meditated. All it did was show me my brain waves when was one. Like, so what now?

A while back I thought I posted something comparing and contrasting "Mindfulness" with "Watchfulness".
I can't find it now. But I did find this on my drive.

I believe the Judeo-Christian concept of “vigilance” or Nepsis is a kind of “mindfulness”.
The discipline is a moral awareness and watching, attention, waiting, sitting silently in peace.

We find in the Psalms:

Proverbs 4:23 Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.

Psalm 5:3 O Lord, in the morning I will direct my prayer to You, and I will watch expectantly.

Psalm 37:7 Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him;

Psalm 59:9 O my strength, I will wait on You; for God is my refuge.

Psalm 62:5 My soul, wait silently for God, for my hope is from Him.

Psalm 132:2 As a child at rest in its mother’s arms, so my soul is quiet within me.

Matthew 26:38 Then He said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Wait here, and keep watch with Me.”

What does that mean for you? How do you keep watch with Christ?
Meditation is the primary method to develop mindfulness. Watching and waiting..

⦁ When we quiet ourselves and gently observe without judgment, things begin to surface. We notice. We become more self-aware. The Lord speaks to us in subtle ways. God helps us integrate things we might otherwise avoid. And with that integration comes healing.

⦁ Mindfulness is not emptying the mind but being clear, alert and aware

⦁ Mindfulness is not Spacing out or escaping but being Watchful and vigilant

Your poll is missing at least one significant meditative practice, lectio divina.
You are right. One of the easiest and most helpful.

At what point in my response did I mention the Jesus prayer or a specific practice? You jumped the gun.

~bella

Psychophysical discipline and asceticism are part of praying the Jesus Prayer, as it is traditionally practiced. These aren't necessarily "new age", just because they are foreign to certain western forms of Christian (often Protestant) religion. Many forms of Christianity are embodied in practice, and not merely intellectual or affectivel/emotional; even the body participates in sanctification and glorification.

By psychophysical discipline, I mean certain ways of praying the Jesus Prayer involve:

1) posture, often bowing the head or closing the eyes
2) breath control (sometimes, though not always)
3) nespsis and apatheia (mindfulness and inner calm)
4) placing the focus on the heart (the physical heart, not just as a metaphor).
5) use of a rope or prayer beads (often, but not always).

I am re-rereading a book I read, gave away to someone and then bought again.

In it he mentions the benefits of breath counting mediation.
There are various ways to do it. I like the In breath +1, out breath +2 and doing that up to 10 then starting over.
