Our division come down to the role of government.
1) The Right seems to prefer limited government, smaller government and more self care except when it comes to regulating personal sexuality.
2) The Left seems to prefer more government, more social programs to help people but also more individual personal freedom.
One would think religion has no place in these two philosophies of Res Publica.
But what we see is religion being used to justify option 1.
What disturbs me is that Jesus Christ and the Bible speak a great deal about care and love for the least of His people, compassion for the poor and vulnerable, yet these important aspects of Religion seem ignored. Why did people bring crosses on January 6th? To validate their misbehavior. They knew they were doing wrong and compromised by bolstering with the most powerful symbol of faith we have.
But I remind myself that even Jesus turned the temple tables over. Is there some valid comparison here? Attacking the capital and attacking the temple money changer? I don't think so. Not by a long shot. That would require sacralizing the capital and congress. Do we really want to do that.
I can see a desire and need to enact laws and ethos that are based on Biblical values. I think we all want that. The problem is in the diversity of interpretation of what those values ought to look like in 21st century and where the priorities ought to be.
The most important one that is currently being discarded is care for the poor, the marginalized, and the vulnerable.
