If I'm reading the Bible in English, or giving a message in English, I go to the KJV. However, my primary Bible is the Luther Bible. I used to carry the 1984 revision around, but nowadays, I prefer older revisions (1912 or earlier--I'm a big fan of the 1545).

Blessings,
jth

Hello all,

I recently changed to using Jay P Greens "literal translation', modern KJV and I also use the "Hebrew-Greek-English interlinear" for study.

I like these from Sovereign Grace Publishers because they are based on the same Masoretic text and Received Text that the King James is based on.

How Important is The Bible TO YOU?

Every Christian is commanded to "STUDY" the Word of God according to 2 Timothy 2:15-- "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." However, this command is removed from every modern bible version on the market. Only the King James Bible has it! Now who do you suppose would be against a child of God giving himself to the STUDY of God's Word (Gen. 3:1)?

oDoes anyone like the New World Translation(NWT)???

I had a friend that liked it.........

Hector

Was your friend a Jehovah's Witness? The New World Translation was prepared by the Watchtower Society, and is apparently intended to conform to Jehovah's Witness theology, even if that requires a modification of the scriptual text.

Isn't it interesting that many ppl claim the translation they use is one of the most accurate?

Just something to think about.

The Bible was originally written in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, with different parts being written in one of those languages. No word-for-word translatin can be fully "literal" and still express all the nuances of the original language.

Each of the major translations of the Bible attempt to accurately convey what the Bible has to say--but may do it in different ways. For example, the NASB tends to do a good job of accurately translating the original meaning of a word to its current English counterpart--but may sacrifice some clarity of thought in the process. The NIV tends to do a better job of translating the thought being conveyed in the original language to a nearly equivalent thought in modern English--but may sacrifice some word-to-word accuracy in the process. The Amplified attempts to give more of the nuances of the original language by placing various English synonymns in parentheses, while a parallel Bible may place each of those other translations (or some other translations) side by side.

For general reading I normally use the NIV. Although I find the notes in the Life Application Bibles to be interesting and often helpful, for serious study I geneally prefer the Complete Biblical Library. The Preacher's Outline and Sermon Bible and Strong's Exhaustive Concordance are also beneficial.

The reason the modern translations do not use the word "study" when translating 2 Timothy 2:15 is not because they are "against a child of God giving himself to the STUDY of God's Word." Rather, those translations are attempting to more accurately translate what Paul wrote to Timothy.

The Greek word which the KJV translates as "study" is spoudason, which is better translated as be diligent, be eager, be zealous, make every effort, do your utmost, or words to that effect.

Hope that helps....
