When we look at how Nixon quit over almost nothing. I wonder if Trump stands a chance at any success at all in the 2024 election. It sure does not look like it. Why does he even bother to run at all? Why would he not be ready to retire at his age.

I hope not, but I've learned never to underestimate the ardor of his most devout disciples. At any rate, it's a slam dunk certainty that if (when) he doesn't win, he'll claim massive voter fraud again. With exactly the same evidence as before.

Why does he even bother to run at all? Why would he not be ready to retire at his age.

Same reason he does anything else, I'd say: Ego.

-- A2SG, suspects he's more ego than man at this point.....

He thinks he can murder someone in Times Square and his supporters will still stick with him.

And he won't be indicted for murdering anyone in Times Square...yet.

There are (according to Wikipedia) 23 people who sit on a grand jury, and "at least 12" must vote to indict. They are among the most endangered people in NYC right now, and, angry as Trump (and his supporters) are, I certainly hope the Secret Service will keep the public safe from both of them.

it is a bit early to try to decide what the situation will be then.

Ego. And of course a potential shield from conviction if he drags out his day in court.

There’s profit to be had from running, fundraising, and renting out various venues to his own campaign and the campaigns of fellow Republicans, lobbyists and others seeking favors. Also being a candidate, let alone president, affords him some immunity from prosecution and punishment.

He discovered that being president gave him immunity from prosecution.

Given his lawyers' ability to drag things out, this prosecution may have to be put on ice in January 2025.

Also, of course, there's the opportunity to channel campaign funds into his businesses.

While I would much prefer Trump to Biden, I can't see Trump getting elected.

I said to my friends "even if Trump is elected, he won't become president" --his adversaries will do everything and anything to keep him out of office, legal or illegal. That includes people in his own party.

but things could get so bad, that if he wins the nomination, he could win the general election. Note:

1. Almost every economist thinks we will be in a recession by the fourth-quarter of this year, and that it will be lengthy. Some say it will be a deep recession, with a credit crunch, mass-layoffs, etc.
2. Inflation continues to be a problem, and is running 300% above the Fed target rate. It isn't going to be gone by next November.
3. Gas prices will surge this Summer and next
4. Biden has presided over some of the worst foreign-policy disasters in presidential history: the war in Ukraine, deteriorating relations with China, Saudi Arabia, etc., the Afghanistan pullout, outraged European allies over his green energy subsidies and hostile trade actions, etc.
5. The Democrats, and Biden, continue to push radical social agendas, including sex-change operations for kids, reparations, defunding police departments, CRT in schools, labeling parents "terrorists", etc.
6. The strong possibility of Kamala Harris taking over for an aging Biden after 2024 --she is dangerously incompetent
7. A couple days after a transgender girl shoots up a Christian school, Biden declares a "Transgender Day of Visibility" --outraging Christians.

In short, the Democrats could be going into an environment in November 2024 that makes Jimmy Carter's run in 1980 look like the good ole days. American voters will be completely outraged, and ready to take out their frustrations at the ballot box.

But I think the GOP needs to put DeSantis forth as the nominee

Some people like that. The traveling, the clothing, and all the perks that money can buy from donations. So you think that is why Trump is running, for the money? He, or at least his sons made lots of money when he was president. There is a lot of red tape in the construction business and they can cut through all of that. He learned al from Hillary. She taught a lot of people a lot of stuff about how to make money,

Partly, but also for ego gratification and immunity from prosecution.

He, or at least his sons made lots of money when he was president.
He did make a lot of money while he was president, much of it from overcharging the Secret Service who were protecting him, from foreign dignitaries seeking favors, etc. He put his business into a revocable trust of which he was the sole beneficiary. His sons, oldest daughter and son-in-law also profited from his time in office.

There is a lot of red tape in the construction business and they can cut through all of that.
He is not in the construction business and hasn't been for decades. He invests in real estate, golf courses and, mainly, from marketing.

He learned al from Hillary. She taught a lot of people a lot of stuff about how to make money,

Trump has a good chance at winning the nomination.

However, I think that he has little chance of winning in the general election. Huge amounts of money from Republican donors will be donated to fund various efforts to defeat him (while supporting Republican candidates for the Senate, the House and state legislatures).

The Democrats are NOT on good shape. Top republican donors want to retake the Senate and perhaps even the House. If Trump is the nominees, these donors will look to 2024 when they would very likely to win after 8 years of Biden.
